Donation protected
Dr. Angel Pichardo Almonte, “el Profe,” professor, social scientist, physician and holistic healer, poet, organizer, and above all someone with a deep lifelong commitment to radical social change, died of cancer Thursday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic at the age of 55.

The viewing, funeral services and burial took place on Friday and Saturday, and a community cultural celebration of Angel’s life will take place in his boyhood neighborhood of Simon Bolívar on General Sucre street. Family, friends and organizational and university colleagues are planning a daylong event on Sunday, August 27 in which la Sucre will be closed to car traffic and loved ones will be invited to participate in collective grief and memory through stories, poetry and music.

This fundraiser will contribute funds to provide a meal and refreshment for the hundreds of people expected at this event, including bus loads from provinces outside the city.

Please join us in donating to honor Angel, el Profe, Dr. P — from all of us who consider him mentor and friend.

In addition, please feel free to write a memory, anecdote or condolence in Spanish or English. Messages will be compiled and read at the celebration on Sunday.

Donations made by Thursday, August 24 at noon ET will be sent in an initial transfer to the DR, and then a second transfer will be made the following week if donations are made after the first deadline. Thank you so much for your care and solidarity with Angel’s big community!

More about the life and work of Angel Pichardo Almonte:

Angel contributed to the education and political formation of thousands of young people and was immersed in both popular mobilization and the production of knowledge and theory for social transformation. As a young adult he participated as a militant and leader in the Movimiento Popular Dominicano (MPD) and in 2000 founded la Escuela de Formación Socioeconómica y Cultural that became Justicia Global. His commitment to raising generations of socially conscious young people extended beyond the borders of the Dominican Republic: he helped lead and host study programs and exchanges for students from Ithaca College (2007-10) and Cornell University (2014-17).

Surviving family members include children Angel Wilfredo, Legna and Gabriela, partner Mistalia, granddaughter Minha, parents Rosa and Ramon, sisters Nana, Maribel and Aida, and many aunts and uncles, cousins and many more who he mentored and informally adopted.

Angel’s legacy includes, in addition to a broad body of literature from social research and theory to poetry and short stories, a network of people in the DR and beyond committed to continuing the work of social, economic and cultural change.
