Patti Maphis (nee Kern) February 5, 1963- April 29, 2026
Like a soul who always knew the stars were watching over her, Patti Maphis moved through the world with a free spirit, an open heart and a warmth that drew people to her like moonlight draws the tide. Born under the wintry Pennsylvanian sky of February 5, 1963—a true Aquarius in every sense—she carried within her a rare and radiant kindness that never dimmed.
Her journey began in Pennsylvania, written in the stars long before she could read them, before her family's path led her to Middleburg Heights, Ohio. It was there that the universe, in its infinite wisdom, placed Scott Maphis in her orbit. Together they became a constellation of their own — a young family carried by the winds of adventure, first to the sun-soaked shores of Key West, Florida, then onward to the quiet landscapes of Wisconsin, and eventually back home to Northeast Ohio, where they planted roots and raised their three children. In 2017, following the passing of her beloved mother, Mary Lou Kern (nee Evans), the stars charted one final move — to the coastal warmth of Wilmington, North Carolina, where the salt air and southern light seemed made just for her.
For years, Patti poured her enormous heart into caring for her husband Scott, who preceded her in death in 2022 — a devotion as steadfast and selfless as the tides. But ask anyone who knew her, and they will tell you: walk into the Carolina Beach Publix, and you walked into Patti's world. Her colleagues adored her, and every customer left feeling not like a stranger, but like family. She had that gift — the rare, luminous ability to make every soul feel seen.
Patti always had a deep appreciation for the spiritual side of life and found comfort in the movements of the heavens while holding quite faith in things unseen. She believed in the meaningful connections that weave people together. She believed, as only the truly awakened do, that we are all made of stardust — and now, she has simply returned to it.
On April 29, 2026, far too soon and far too suddenly, Patti left the earthly plane at 63. She leaves behind three children who carry her light forward: her daughter Dr. Nicole Maphis, a neuroscientist at the University of New Mexico; her daughter Ms. Chrissy Maphis, a nurse and clinical manager at Novant Health; and her son Mr. Michael Maphis, who carries on the family tradition of serving their community with the Harris Teeter Grocery Chain. She is also survived by her sisters Judith Schmidt and Angel Kern. She was preceded in death by her sisters Jacqueline Kern and Sandy Martynowski, as well as her husband Scott and her mother Mary Lou.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Patti's honor at her daughter’s home on Saturday, May 9th from 12 PM-3 PM. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite color or wear tie dye — because she never believed in a world without vibrance, and neither should we.
Rest among the stars, sweet Patti. You always knew your way home.
This fundraiser is being set up to help offset the costs of funeral expenses that were completely unexpected.
