Celebrating James Hunter’s Life and Legacy

James E. Hunter, son of Willie Alvin Hunter and Hazel Agnes Russell, passed away in the home he loved most — a place that reflected his independence and stubborn streak, qualities that defined him to the very end.

Those who truly knew James knew his deep love of nature, and more specifically, his curious fondness for pigeons. While others might have overlooked these feathered companions, James saw them as resilient survivors — perhaps a reflection of himself.

With a rough-and-tumble exterior, James was nonetheless a man of generosity. He gave freely to charities such as Boys Town, Cystic Fibrosis foundations, and Save the Whales, proving that beneath his rugged shell was a heart that cared deeply for others. His courage and strength were evident in his career choices: climbing power lines, working in industrial fields, and painting homes that should have required a crew — but James, in his determined way, often tackled them alone.

As a father, James was engaged and steadfast. He raised Shantae as his own, raised his children to be financially responsible, politically aware, and spiritually grounded, and continued to support their mother long after divorce — a testament to his enduring character.

James was also a passionate sports fan. He cheered for the Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, LA Rams, and Texas Rangers, but carried a lifelong disdain for the Dallas Cowboys — a humorous contradiction given that he lived in Texas for over 54 years. His meager lifestyle reflected his priorities: legacy over luxury. At one point, he powered his house with an extension cord rather than hire an electrician — though, in true James fashion, he eventually got the job done.

He is survived by his children: Shantae Finley, Elvinia (Sheree) Hunter-Bowen, and Elvin O’mar Hunter (affectionately known as “Little Fella”). He is also remembered by Caroline Hibbler, the mother of his children and wife of 12 years.

James’s family wishes to acknowledge the care and presence of Heaven Lewis, his devoted caretaker and neighbor, whose kindness brought comfort in his final years.

James lived life on his own terms — sometimes unconventional, often humorous, but always with intention. His legacy is one of resilience, generosity, and love, and though he has departed, his lessons and laughter remain with those who knew him best.
