Our father, Dr. Cheng-Jen “Allen” Chen, 82, of Holmdel, New Jersey, passed away on March 30, 2025, after a year-long fight with bile duct cancer. He was surrounded by his wife & children at the time of passing.
Allen’s career spanned over four decades at Bell Labs, AT&T, Lucent Technologies, Auctor Corp., and Teleion Wireless, and he contributed to several product developments from conception to manufacturing. Allen was an esteemed member of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, once serving as National Committee Chair, and a Life Senior Member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers "IEEE" - holding numerous positions & receiving a multitude of awards over the last 35 plus years. Allen firmly believed that Asian American engineers had emerged as a major technological driving force in the U.S. and that their contributions helped to transform the landscape of American academia and global industries.
In lieu of other funeral gifts, we are looking to form a fund in my father's memory. These funds will be donated - in conjunction with the Chinese Institute of Engineers - toward annual scholarships for Asian American high school and college age students who may hold a future in Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) industries.
Founded in 1917, the Chinese Institute of Engineers – USA (CIE-USA) is a non-profit professional organization of Chinese-American engineers, scientists and other professionals.
We appreciate your support during this challenging time, and know that these contributions would be meaningful in honoring our father's legacy.
With gratitude,
Tony, Steve & Angie
