Our beloved Alexander Martin-Ross passed away in San Diego on August 7, 2020. He was a friend to many and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was great athlete, excelling in Basketball and Football. Even though Alex faced many challenges in life, he never gave up.
I first met Alex as a teenager who became friends with my two sons at Sabino High School. He had been in foster care since the age of six and was living in a group home. Alex began sleeping over at our home - every night. It amazed me that the group home did not check us out but allowed him to do so for an extended period of time. Eventually his case worker allowed Alex to live with us. I was not a licensed foster parent so no funding was granted. We did not mind because he had quickly grown on us. I was now a single parent with three teenage boys and we became family. Alex always kept me on my toes and I was honored that he considered me his mom and Cameron and Colin, as his brothers. Through the years as he moved in and out of our home, we faced several challenges together. One thing we knew though was that as family, we would always be there for each other.
Parenting these three boys brought so much joy to my life. Alex fit right in with his sense of humor and strongly held opinions. We had heated arguments, especially about sports, and we had many comedic moments. Even in adulthood they argued about who was the funniest and of course it was me! He was the son I expected to produce my first grand babies.
Alex had a charm that was irresistible. Just ask the young ladies! He loved life and was moving to California to start a new chapter. Unfortunately, he did not get the opportunity to blossom in a new environment. I am so proud of him for gifting himself so that several people can have a chance at a better life. I appreciated the honor showed to him by the medical staff at UCSD Medical Center at Hillcrest for his contribution of his entire body to the transplant program.
We are raising funds to help pay for Alex's final expenses, memorial service and related expenses. This loss was totally unexpected and we have no life insurance to cover the cost. It is my dream to someday have a home for young men leaving the foster care system as they "age-out", usually at eighteen years. I would like to name this home in honor of Alex. More needs to be done for our children in foster care.
We thank you for any contributions you can give.
