Our father came from Haiti to this country with nothing on his back. He hustled to save money to start his own business. He took pride in being an entrepreneur & helping the community out whenever he could, which was almost always. Watching the last few years of our father's life unfold has been a heartbreaking journey. It started with a shadow of depression that crept in, a darkness he tried to drown with alcohol. It felt like watching a cruel play, show or movie where a man who once had everything slowly lost it all. No one could have predicted such a devastating turn, the complete unraveling of a life.

His descent continued until he found himself homeless, a state that led to a stroke and a long year in the hospital. He had lost the ability to care for himself, a profound and painful loss of independence. From there, he moved to a nursing home, a place meant to help, but where his condition only grew worse, until he finally slipped away.

The hardest part is the space he left behind, the chasm of unsaid goodbyes. We are left with the ache of all the words we will never get to say, the final moments we were never given. It's a silence that screams louder than any words ever could. Our children will grow up without experiencing the hilarious, caring, and loving man our father was once to so many people, including his children. His only wish was to get back on his feet to support his children & grandchildren. This is truly heartbreaking! We are hurt, broken, and grieving a loss we never saw coming so soon.
