A Graduation 17 Years in the Making

Hi friends and family!

After spending many years focused on caring for those I love the most, family and loved ones, I’m incredibly proud to share that at 56 years young, I’ve officially earned my Bachelor’s degree! I will also be receiving my teaching certificate in just a few months — to become a special education teacher. This goal has been many years (and many life chapters) in the making, and I’m so excited to step into this next chapter of service and purpose.

Over the past year, I’ve worked as a special education paraprofessional, supporting students with diverse needs in inclusive classroom settings (Cover photo was after I spent the day engaging with my students at the school's first annual Color Run! The fun I got paid for some days!) Earlier in my journey, I spent six years in general education classrooms, where my passion for teaching first took root. Alongside that role, I also served as PTA president for six years, working closely with families, staff, and the wider school community. During that time, we raised funds to support programs like consumable math books, after-school reading and writing tutors, staff appreciation efforts, and family support around the holidays and back-to-school season.

These experiences — both recent and foundational — confirmed my calling: I want to be the kind of teacher who shows up with heart, patience, and a dedication to nurturing each student’s strengths.

Some of you may know pieces of the journey: I left college 17 years ago to support my teenage children through some challenging times, focusing fully on being present for them when they needed me most. I later moved to Florida to care for an elderly family member and, after their passing, returned to Colorado to support my son in addressing and navigating a challenging situation with his home and eventually transitioning into a place that better suited his needs. During that same time, my husband began facing significant health challenges that led to life-changing surgery — something he continues to manage today. In addition, our home has long been a steady source of care and support for a loved one who depends on us daily. Through it all, I never let go of the dream of finishing my degree. Two and a half years ago, we made a fresh start in Missouri, and last fall, I took a leap of faith and I re-enrolled in college to complete my Bachelor’s degree.

Now, I like to joke that I’ve lived life in reverse: I raised my children first, then went back to college, and now I’m starting my teaching career when most people are thinking about retirement. But I’m not done yet! I’m passionate about our youth and their futures, and I truly hope to serve students for the next 10–15 years before I hang up my teacher hat.

Although I’m not having a traditional graduation party or walking in the ceremony (with family and friends spread across many states), I would still love to celebrate this moment with you. If you feel moved to support this milestone, I’ve set up this page as a virtual “graduation card” — a way to send well-wishes or a cash gift in lieu of attending a party.

Every kind word, every gesture — big or small — means the world to me. Thank you for cheering me on, whether in spirit, from afar, or with a note of encouragement. Your love and support have helped carry me through this journey, and I’m excited for the road ahead as I step into my dream role — as a special education teacher dedicated to helping every child thrive.

With love and deep gratitude,
Lenia Hahn
