Celebrate Juneteenth with MumBet's Legacy
Donation protected
I am hoping to raise money to support a production of "1781", a play detailing the story of MumBet (also known as Elizabeth Freeman) and how she won her freedom.
MumBet was the first enslaved person to gain her freedom. It was 1781, thus the name of the play written and researched by myself and Linda Rossi. MumBet took the name Elizabeth Freeman and preceded to be the most celebrated midwife in this part of New England.
Everyone wanted her to deliver the goods and deliver she did.
She had previously heard several men behind closed doors saying that ”all men are created equal”. She did not hear the word “women”, because it was not used, but took it to mean her just the same. As she put it, “We’re not critters.”
We, of course, need funds to put this on. Paying actors, staff, and the Children's Theater, who has graciously hosted us in this excellent space. The good Lord knows we’d all love to work for free, just for the love of it, and love it we do. But please give what you can.
Come see and hear her story of inspiration and courage, qualities we are all in sore need in these troubled times. The Center on Main, Falls Village, Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m. in coordination with the JUNETEENTH celebration.
Admission is free; donations are gratefully accepted.
