In loving memory of Juanita Nieves
Juanita Nieves, or Mamá by family, was an incredible woman who was the definition of resilient. She was born in Queretaro, México on December 22, 1942, and was one of 8 siblings. Her family often referred to her as a “saint amongst the living” as she devoted her life to her husband and children, making sure there was always love and laughter in her home. Her care often extended beyond her own household, and she somehow managed to feed and clothe the neighborhood children as well.
At the age of 46, she immigrated to the United States alongside her husband and children, driven by a dream of a better future. Juanita was always a woman with a sharp mind and determination; she had taught herself to read and write as a young girl. In 2016, she proudly became a U.S. citizen, having studied and passed the test with the same dedication she brought to every aspect of her life. She laid her roots in the East Bay. Despite facing lifelong struggles with illness and arthritis, Juanita never let pain dim her light. She continued to show her love by cooking her family's favorite meals, attending her grandchildren’s events, and sharing long-lasting moments of joy. She found happiness in the simple things such as watching children play and laugh, bird watching, and enjoying her favorite melodies of 60s rock and boleros. Even as her health brought her in and out of hospitals in her later years, she remained true to herself. Always singing, always praying, and always lifting others with her strength. She truly was a woman born for peace.
Juanita passed on April 25, 2025, in Oakland, CA, at the age of 82, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly. All the pain felt is just a testament to the love she gave throughout her life.
Her family is working hard to create a ceremony and headstone that is fitting for the caring and strong woman she lived as, and any amount you are able to contribute would help us reach our goal. Thank you for helping us honor her life. Mamá, siempre estás en nuestros corazones, que sueñes con los angelitos y que la paz que diste a tantos ahora te acompañe por siempre.
