We are former students of Dr. Elizabeth Bounds and she has a milestone birthday this year. We all wanted to celebrate her contribution to making the world a better place, for us especially.
An Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at Candler School of Theology, Dr. Bounds models to us the necessity of living a life, mindful of personal ethics. She does not just teach this stuff, she lives it and shares it by uncovering the light, which many do not believe exists, in some pretty dark places.
It turns out that today, as we launch this fundraiser, (September 30, 2021) is the day Kelly Gissendaner was executed, 6 years ago. We that met, knew, taught and learned alongside Kelly, remember this date each year as a most auspicious date. If you know about Kelly, you know that Kelly's life, once she began a theology program behind bars, reflected the value of Christian ethics as taught by Dr. Bounds.
The work started behind prison bars with a writing group at Metro State Prison. Then it became a certificate program and it has even led to Life University offering an associates degree to, not just women behind bars, but also some of the officers who work with the women. With COVID, the theology program is temporarily suspended but will resume again.
To honor Dr. Bounds, we, some of her students both from prison and from Candler School of Theology would like to make a donation on her behalf to GACHEP, The Georgia Coalition for Higher Education in Prison where Patrick Rodriguez and Dr. Thomas Fabisiak are the Co-Executive Directors. https://www.gachep.org/
Dr. Bounds believes in this organization and supports them and would like to bring attention to the great work that they are doing in Georgia. Giving current and formerly incarcerated students an opportunity to receive an education so they can reclaim their dignity and discover parts of themselves is literally Dr. Bound's lifelong work!
Please donate generously to GACHEP! And thank you in advance. Please leave messages of affection and regard for her. Let us celebrate her now!!! COVID has taught us about the expediency of celebrations NOW and not later.
Thank you for all you have done for all of us, Dr. Elizabeth Bounds. Here she walks through the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration in Montgomery, Alabama following the light that does exist even in dark places. You will always be Dr. Bounds to us!
