In Loving Memory of My Dad, Donavan Bates (Burketh): A Story of Love, Laughter, and Unbreakable Spirit
My dad, Donavan, was the kind of person who left a mark on every life he touched. He wasn’t famous or wealthy, but he carried a wealth of love, wisdom, humor and generosity that rippled through our family and community. He believed that the simplest acts of kindness could light up the darkest days, and he showed this in every laugh, every phone call, and every late-night conversation.
When life threw challenges our way, he faced them with quiet courage and an unwavering optimism that felt like a lighthouse on a foggy night. He never wanted anyone to worry about him. He taught us to be brave, to persevere, and to never take a single moment for granted.
We are so heartbroken to share that my dad, Donavan recently passed way. My Dad believed he could save the world, so he tried helping everyone he came in contact with. Except this last person assaulted him and as a result he’s no longer here. Our hearts are full of memories but also the practical burden of funeral arrangements. The financial strain of saying goodbye in a way that honors his legacy is overwhelming, and that’s why we’re turning to our community for help.
Our goal is to give my Dad a funeral that reflects the life he lived: simple, dignified, and full of love. We want to celebrate his kindness, his infectious laughter, and the countless ways he touched lives—whether it was through a comforting word, a helping hand, or a listening ear.
