Celebrate David's Life

My little brother David died suddenly last week.  David was 36. He is survived by a son, five siblings, the mother of his child, and our parents. Our family is grief-stricken, our mother lost her youngest son, our nephew lost his father. My siblings and I lost our brother.

David was my baby brother, he was silly and full of energy. He rarely stopped moving.  As a child, he left frogs in the bathtub and mud on the floor. He was a talented visual artist, even when he was very young;  we would all beg him to draw pictures for us. He was a goofy kid who always found something to be excited about.

He was only ever still when he slept. During the coldest nights in the winters in Michigan, he crept out into the hallway with his blanket and arranged it over the heating grate, tucking it beneath him and letting it fill with hot air. The heat would inflate it like a bubble while the rest of us shivered in our beds.

Me (Rachel), David, and our brother Michael Jr.

David as the Karate Kid but with more weapons ;)

As an adult, David was a dedicated father and remained close to our mother. They spent their time together painting, laughing, and going to drum circles. David loved to spin fire while our mama played the drum. He was an unstoppable whirl of motion, spinning in the darkness, the fire sketching shapes around him in the night.

My siblings and I used to lay on our backs on a gravel road, looking up at the night sky and naming the constellations. We'd hear the chirp of cicadas and bask in the faint glow of the stars. I think he had this in mind when he chose to name his child Sage Orion. Sage was his light in the darkness.

We're raising money to cover expenses. We want to gather the whole family in order to pay tribute to our brother. We were not prepared for this sudden loss, in any sense, and need financial support to cover funeral costs. Please contribute whatever you can so we can celebrate David's life and honor the essential part he played in all of our lives.  Any remaining funds will be put into a trust for my nephew, David's son.

Thanks in advance to the folks who loved my brother. Please spread this far and wide to help us celebrate his life.
