Help Lay Cristina Potters to Rest and Create a Place to Remember Her and Honor Her Life and Far-reaching Legacy

Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers,

My name is Leslie, and I am reaching out to ask for your help in honoring the life and memory of my Mom, Cristina Potters.

Cristina was born in Chicago, Illinois, and returned to her Heavenly Father on May 17th, 2025, in Morelia. She was fiercely proud of the dual citizenship she held with the US and her beloved adopted home, Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico.

Cristina was a vibrant, compassionate, and deeply generous person who touched countless lives through her writing, her famous blog, MexicoCooks.typepad.com, her friendship, and her unwavering kindness. She loved her life in Mexico and gave her heart to her beloved country.

Cristina made her home in Mexico for over 40 years - having lived in Morelia, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Ajijic, and other places that she held dear. She found deep joy in the culture, the people, and the community she loved and was a devoted member of.

Since 2005, she has shared her love and immense knowledge and respect for Mexico—its mercados, the kitchens of countless indigenous people and their food, culture, and of course, people—through MexicoCooks.typepad.com. She welcomed readers from all over the world into her life and her own kitchen, offering not only recipes but a deep understanding of Mexican traditions, language, and heart. My Mom had an all but native grasp of the Spanish language. Her writing was a reflection of her generous spirit and her passion for the country she adopted as her own.

As we grieve her loss, we are also navigating the significant expenses related to her end-of-life arrangements. These include funeral costs, memorial services, and associated legal expenses.

In addition to laying Cristina to rest with dignity, we hope to establish a memorial site or plaque in Morelia, a quiet, public place, where friends, admirers, and loved ones can visit, reflect, and honor her memory. Cristina meant so much to so many, we want to make sure that her legacy has a home in the city she loved.

My Mom had a bigger-than-life personality; however, she did not wish for a big, splashy event. Instead, I am raising funds to create a simple, dignified memorial in Morelia. Something permanent and public - a small marker or bench, where people can pause and say "Aqui estuvo Cristina." A place to reflect, to remember, and to honor someone who gave so much of herself to her beloved Mexico..

We are still exploring what that memorial might look like, and where it could be. Perhaps a plaque in a park, a quiet bench in a plaza, or near a cultural space she loved. If you have ideas for a meaningful location in Morelia - or know someone who could help guide that part of the process - I'd truly love to hear from you. This site (gofundme) will not allow me to include my personal email here, but I am easily located via my Mom's FB profile.

If you are able to contribute, thank you. - every donation helps bring this vision closer.
And if you cannot donate but want to help in another way, even sharing this campaign or sharing a memory or story about Cristina means a great deal.

Gracias de corazon for being part of her story - and now, a part of her legacy.

With love and gratitude,

Leslie
