The White's Flood Recovery

This is Cedric and Nicole White and their 3 children of Conway, SC. Cedric and Nicole moved into their new home just six months ago. They felt called to Conway to minister through their musical talents and become the youth minister at a small, but tight-knit church. They knew there would be work that needed to be done to their home, but it was certainly habitable. They started with projects before they were completely unpacked. They painted walls and trim, replaced baseboards, tiled and updated their fireplaces, refinished cabinets, installed new doors and tiled backsplashes.

On the morning of September 18, 2018 they heard a knock on the door. Public works warned them that they would have up to two feet of water in their home. The Waccamaw river was rising due to the devastating, historic flooding caused by Hurricane Florence so they were forced to evacuate their home. Knowing they did not have much time, they moved as much as they could to the second floor, placed sandbags and quickly packed bare necessities. Over the next couple of days, they watched helplessly as the water filled their yard, crawlspace below and entered their home, covering the entire first floor.

The water is beginning to recede, but until their home can be inspected for damage and necessary repairs completed, the family is displaced for the foreseeable future. Unlike others who live in flood zones and are required to have flood insurance, the White's home is not in a flood zone, so they do not have flood insurance. Thankfully, they are safe, though they face a long, difficult road to repair and replace what the toxic flood waters have destroyed and taken from them.

Initial and immediate expenses include the costs of renting, continuing to pay their mortgage on their home that is uninhabitable and replacing the essentials that were destroyed. In addition, they're going to need to begin repairs on their home so they can once again live in it. They will need to replace their washer and dryer, water heater, refrigerator, dishwasher, oven and heat pumps/HVAC units. Much of their flooring, insulation, plaster walls and ducting will also need to be replaced. The White family is not a wealthy family. They're a family that places value on their relationship with God and giving back to the community through their music ministry. Please help them get back on their feet, so they can continue to help so many.
