CJ Coleman Services & Memorial Fund

Monday, February 20th, mother, daughter, and sister Cecelia Coleman went to the hospital. This was something she'd done many times before since being diagnosed with leukemia at age seven. Each visit she arrived determined to keep fighting, keep living, and keep laughing. This time was no different. However, her long battle came to an end. After slipping into a coma, CJ was pronounced brain dead that Friday and was taken off life support Saturday afternoon surrounded by family and friends. She was 24.

CJ was the strongest person we all knew. She was not stopped by the pain nor the disruptions to her schooling nor by the information that doctors didn't expect her to still be alive. Every day we saw the bravery that allowed her to keep going and we'd gotten so used to her fighting (and winning) that Saturday knocked the breath out of us all.

Though I was not her birth mother, she and her younger sister Melissa became my sixth and seventh children. With Cecelia's passing, her two-year-old daughter, Aaliyah, will now be in my and her sister's care. CJ couldn't have been prouder of her sister, Melissa, who will be graduating from college this spring and starting grad school in the fall.

No matter how tired or in pain or worried she was, she gave her all to her loved ones. She would do anything for her family and now we are here to return that love by giving CJ a proper memorial and making sure Aaliyah is well taken care of in the future. The funding goal listed is what's needed for the service, cremation, and other end of life costs. We are hoping to exceed this goal. Anything beyond will go towards Aaliyah's care.

We appreciate anything you can give. And if at this time you are not able to give, please share the fundraiser with those that may be able. Thank you for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.

CJ's Memorial Service will be Saturday March 4th at the Kroc Center in Chicago from 2-5pm.

Thank you,
