Betty's Story: We are Juliana & Luly, dog moms to Betty (named after Betty White). Back in August 2020 this beautiful pup had the misfortune to be born into breeding. Betty was rescued from a breeding farm in Indiana where, before the age of 2 had already had her first litter. On August 6, 2022 we brought Betty home to complete what was supposed to be our family of 6. On September 12, 2022, just 1 month & 1 week after arriving at her forever home, we got the news Betty was pregnant. A short 10 days later, on September 22 Betty gave birth to 10 of the cutest puppies ever created. Thanks to the amazing people at GRSF we were able to find each of them loving & caring homes - one of those homes being ours.
Wanting to finally give Betty a safer & healthier life, we agreed with our vet to have her spayed when she was ready. She was scheduled January 20th for her spay, January 25th was the day Betty started to get sick. After 2 vet office visits failed to provide improvement on Betty's illness & after an amazing recommendation, we took Betty to Advanced Veterinary Care Center (AVCC) the morning of January 27th. As I write this story on January 29th at 11:30p EST, Betty is still at AVCC.
After being at AVCC for 24 hours & a rapid decline in Betty's health, the amazing team at AVCC was able to provide a diagnosis to Betty's symptoms - Tetanus. Yes the same Tetanus people get a vaccine for if you’re about to get stitches or stepped on a rusty nail. A diagnosis in which they only have 35 cases of dogs thus far in veterinary medicine. (Article link below)
Within 48hrs at AVCC, Betty was intubated because she was having trouble swallowing, an effect of the toxin binding to her central nervous system & her muscles starting to paralyze. The decision was made to rush her into surgery that night to remove the infected area because the effects can be reversed. (See article) The surgery went well, a lot was found & a lot was removed. Betty was placed under sedation & currently still is. She needs to be sedated so that her muscles don't twitch or stiffen up- again, an effect of the toxin binding to your central nervous system.
Betty requires time to allow her body to heal but as everyone knows the amount of care & time Betty needs comes at a very costly rate. We have been blessed with assistance from an amazing organization ran by caring friends but as our daily estimates start creeping into 50k & required deposits become larger amounts, there is only so much 1 or even 2 people can do.
When we set out to rescue a dog, we would've never imagined how deeply and instantaneously we'd fall in love with her. We also never imagined we'd ever have to create a gofundme account. We never thought we'd be here. We set out to rescue a dog to give them the life they deserve & she definitely deserves a good life.
In Betty's short 2 years of life, she's lived a hard one. Living on a farm, given no cuddles, no love, used to birth puppies when she was a puppy herself. We want to give Betty the chance to be the puppy she deserves to be. Give her a chance to play with all 27 toys she has to take out every day. Give her a chance to bond with her pup-siblings & her daughter. Give her a chance to have more zoomies around the backyard & go hiking again.
We know times have been & continue to be rough for everyone & understand that many may not have the ability to donate. We ask if you cannot donate, please share this link.
