As we start this new year, we would like to share some information about our son Avery’s health, and the seriousness of the situation he is facing.
Back in February 2023, during a routine office visit, his pediatrician heard a heart murmur. After another followup visit to check if it was still present, we were sent for an echocardiogram to look at his heart. Two days later we found ourselves in a pediatric cardiology office being told he had a birth defect called a coarctation of the aorta that needed to be repaired.
After having his case reviewed by the OHSU Cardiology Department we followed their recommendation for a repair via stent placement, and expected redialation as he grew. That procedure took place on August 17th, 2023. The stent placement went well, and they were able to repair a majority of the coarctation. However, after the procedure, instead of being told he was on the mend we were told they had become aware of another defect, one more serious that would involve more testing and imaging to correctly diagnose.
After more imaging, OHSU told us they had diagnosed Avery with a rare coronary artery defect that has never been seen before. We were told to seek second opinions from across the country. After speaking with several surgeons from different hospitals, we have decided to have his heart repaired by Dr. Frank Hanley at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Dr. Hanley will need to do full open heart surgery with bypass to repair the defects.
These conversations and decisions have taken most of the year and have been some of the hardest we have ever had to make. As parents, it has been the most stressful and life changing situation our family has faced. We are confident that we have selected the best surgeon and hospital for our family.
Avery’s procedure has been scheduled for February 22nd, 2024. Please send good thoughts, prayers, positive vibes and as much support as you can.
