Tengo 35 años, vivo en la República Dominicana, y desde hace 20 años lucho contra la Ataxia de Friedreich, un trastorno neurológico progresivo que afecta mi movilidad, mi coordinación y mi independencia.

Además de esta larga batalla, recientemente fui diagnosticada con un adenoma hipofisario, un tumor benigno que me ha dejado completamente ciega. Esta condición ha hecho mi vida diaria aún más difícil y ha aumentado muchísimo mis gastos médicos.

Durante todos estos años he agotado mis recursos en estudios, evaluaciones y consultas con especialistas para poder ser considerada candidata a un programa de tratamiento cubierto por mi seguro del gobierno. Después de décadas de lucha, por fin estoy a un paso de ser elegible — pero queda un último requisito.

Para iniciar el tratamiento neurológico (que sí estará cubierto por mi seguro), necesito realizarme tres pruebas de sangre finales, las cuales no están cubiertas.

El costo total es de $950 USD.

Esta cantidad es el último obstáculo antes de poder recibir el tratamiento que llevo tantos años esperando.

Si esta campaña supera los $950 necesarios para los análisis de sangre, todos los fondos adicionales se utilizarán para una futura cirugía para remover el adenoma hipofisario, el tumor benigno que me causó la pérdida de la visión.

Esta cirugía es crucial para evitar más complicaciones y mejorar mi salud a largo plazo.

La Ataxia de Friedreich y el tumor hipofisario me han quitado mucho — incluyendo mi independencia y mi vista. Pero no han podido quitarme la esperanza.

Hello, my name is Vielka Méndez, and I am reaching out with humility and hope.

In addition to this long battle, I was recently diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma, a benign tumor that has caused complete loss of my vision. This has made everyday life even more challenging and has placed an even heavier financial burden on me and my family.

Over the years, I have exhausted all my savings paying for tests, evaluations, and specialist visits in hopes of qualifying for a government-covered treatment program. After decades of fighting, I am finally on the verge of being eligible — with one final step remaining.

To begin the neurological treatment (which will be covered by my government insurance), I must complete three final blood tests that are not covered.

The total cost of these required tests is $950 USD.

This amount is the final barrier between me and treatment that could significantly improve my quality of life.

If this campaign surpasses the $950 needed for the blood tests, all remaining funds will be saved for a future surgery to remove the pituitary adenoma — the benign tumor responsible for my blindness.

Friedreich’s Ataxia and the pituitary tumor have taken so much from me, including my independence and my sight. But they have not taken my hope.
