“If there is magic on this planet it is contained in Water” Loren Eisley
Those of you who have lived at Rhiannon know how much of struggle we have with water. We live in a very dry climate and for 10 years we have been watering all our gardens with drinking water and we often struggle with water cuts.
Rhiannon Community is about to embark on its biggest challenge yet, to be sustainable in terms of water.
Our aim is to “To harvest, store and use annual rainfall for irrigation and to construct a reservoir to store and use piped irrigation water on Rhiannon gardens and forest”.
The first phase of the project will be to gutter and put tanks on all the existing buildings to water nearby gardens with rainwater. Currently some buildings have guttering and inadequate storage, some have no guttering or water storage and some have guttering that doesn’t function. By mounting tanks on the bathroom roof and using gravity and a mixture of sprinklers and drip irrigation we plan to relieve ourselves of most of the watering currently done by hand.
As most of you know we are at the completion stage of the ‘Caracola’, the big earth bag building that we have been working on for 5 years. The second phase of our water project is to collect the rainfall from the roof of this huge building and store it in a new reservoir which we hope will also function as a swimming pool!! In this phase, we will also seal the existing ‘Laguna’ and using pumps be able to move water from the Caracola reservoir, to the Laguna and to ‘the well’ outside the kitchen and if necessary in reverse.
Phase three of the project will be to pipe the irrigation water from Cayambe to the ‘Laguna” and to “the well”. This is a lot of pipe and apart from pipe we need funds for the connection and cost per hectare to receive the irrigation water in the first place.
A significant cost forming part of this crowdfunding, apart from the obvious costs of paying for diggers, tanks, geo-membranes, piping and pumps, is fencing. The new reservoir and the existing ‘Laguna’ need proper fencing for child/dog safety. There is no cheap way to do this and our experience has told us that wooden posts are not long lasting and a waste of resources, so we will use metal.
If we make over and above our target of $21,500 (16500 GBP) we will use any extra funds to plant trees as windbreak around the new reservoir , but all over the property we want to reforest big areas of Rhiannon.

La comunidad de Rhiannon está a punto de emprender su mayor desafío hasta el momento, ser sostenible en términos de agua.

La segunda fase de nuestro proyecto de agua es recoger la lluvia del techo de este enorme edificio y almacenarla en un nuevo reservorio que esperamos que también funcione como piscina. En esta fase, también sellaremos la "Laguna" existente y, con el uso de bombas, podremos trasladar el agua desde el depósito de Caracola a la Laguna y al "pozo" fuera de la cocina y, si es necesario, a la inversa.
La tercera fase del proyecto consistirá en canalizar el agua de riego de Cayambe a la "Laguna" y al "pozo". Esta es una gran cantidad de tuberías y, aparte de las tuberías, necesitamos fondos para la conexión y el costo por hectárea para recibir el agua de riego en primer lugar.
Un costo significativo que forma parte de este crowdfunding, además de los costos obvios de pagar por excavadoras, tanques, geo-membranas, tuberías y bombas, es el cerramiento. El nuevo reservorio y la "Laguna" existente necesitan cercas adecuadas para la seguridad de los niños / perros. No hay una forma barata de hacerlo y nuestra experiencia nos ha dicho que los postes de madera no son duraderos y son un desperdicio de recursos, por lo que usaremos metal.
Si superamos nuestra meta de $ 21,500 (16500 GBP), usaremos fondos adicionales para plantar árboles para proteger el viento alrededor del nuevo reservorio, pero en toda la propiedad queremos reforestar grandes áreas de Rhiannon.

The withdrawal plan as both the founders of the community are British is to withdraw the money into one of our parents bank accounts in the UK (many of you know Helen's mum Mrs. Bicknell). She will then swift transfer the money to us in Ecuador so we can start implementing the project.
