Help Dagmawi Assefa to regain his independence again

Let’s Turn Compassion into Action by Helping Dagmawi Assefa

Dear Family and Friends:

We wanted to reach out to you and let you know that we’re fundraising to help Dagmawi Assefa, a remarkable young man who has been and continues to be a beacon of hope to those who suffer from spinal cord injuries that their life and future doesn’t have to be defined by their physical limitations.

After graduating with honors from Awassa Law School in Ethiopia, Dagmawi and his partner started practicing law and serving their community by representing those who have been denied justice because of their inability to afford for a good legal representation.

Seven years ago, unprovoked, a man walked in their law office and shot Dagmawi’s partner. When Dagmawi came to his partner’s defense, the culprit turned the gun on Dagmawi and shot him in the neck which severed his spinal cord and left him quadriplegic. Although his recovery was long , arduous and agonizing, he did not let that be a hindrance from going back to doing what he loved, which is to serve his community as a lawyer.

Since his accident, Dagmawi published two books in Amharic. His autobiographical book, “Addis Hiwot”, meaning, “New Life,” is an inspiration and a narrative about resilience and encourages others with similar injuries not to give up hope and the limitless possibility of leading a productive life. His second book, “Kemaizenu Wedih “ meaning, “ Before the Corner,” talks about the challenges of reconciliation and readjustment to a new reality and move forward by choosing the path of forgiveness. Towards this end, Dagmawi, by appearing in several television and radio talk shows, continues to highlight the plight and triumph of others with similar experiences.

While Dagmawi had done remarkably well in his recovery and adjustment through the ardent support of his family and friends, his Doctor’s strongly believe that given his young age, he could still benefit from a more specialized therapy, now available only outside of Ethiopia, where he can get a more state of the art treatment such as stem cell injection to regenerate some nerves; spinal cord stimulation therapy, as well as a less invasive surgery to fix some digressional problems he suffers from due to his injuries. His doctors strongly believe these medical interventions to help improve Dagmawi’s overall physical capabilities and quality of life.

Given the excessive cost of such medical interventions, therefore, we are campaigning to raise money to help with Dagmawi’s medical expenses, boarding, transportation, as well as his recovery.

ወጣት ዳግማዊ አሰፋ በ2006 ዓ.ም ከሀዋሳ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በህግ በማዕረግ ተመርቆ ከጓደኛው ጠበቃ ዳንኤል ዋለልኝ ጋር ስራ እንደጀመረ ከአንድ ባለጉዳይ በተተኮሰበት ጥይት ከአንገቱ በታች ያለውን የሰውነቱ”ን ክፍል ማንቀሳቀስ እንዳይችል ሆኖ በዊልቸር መንቀሳቀስ ግድ ሆኖበታል፡፡ ዳግማዊ ግን “ሰው ማለት ከአንገት በላይ ነው!” ብሎ በመነሳት የራሱን የህግ ማማከር ቢሮ ከፍቶ ህብረተሰቡን ከማገልገል በተጨማሪ ”አዲስ ሕይወት” እና “ከማዕዘኑ ወዲህ“ የተሰኙ ሁለት መጽሐፍትን በመጻፍ ለአንባቢያን አብቅቷል፡፡ በመጽሐፍቱም ስለተሰፋ፣ እይታ፣ መቀበል፣ ይቅርታ እና ገጠመኞቹን አካትቶበታል፡፡ በአሁኑ ሰዓት ከሚከታተሉት ሀኪሞች ጋር በመነጋገር ወደ ውጪ ሀገር በመሄድ የአከርካሪ አጥንት ህክምና እና ተያያዝ ቀዶ ጥገናዎች ቢያደርግ ለውጥ ሊያሳይ ይችላል ተብሎ ታምኖበታል፡፡ ለዚህም ህክምና እስከ 60‚000 የአሜርካን ዶላር የሚያስፈልገው በመሆኑ ጓደኞቹና ቤተሰቦቹ ይህንን የጎፈንድ ሚ አካውንት ከፍተንለታል፡፡ ለዚህም የኛን የወገኖቹን ትብብር ይፈልጋልና በጎ ትብብራችሁን በትህትና እንጠይቃለን፡፡
