CCHS Goes to Hamilton

Donation protected
The title says it all! Thanks to the generosity of Gilder Lehrman and the Rockefeller Foundation, the Hamilton Education Program has selected Colleton County High School (Walterboro, SC) to receive a set of affordable tickets for a number of our students to go see the hit Broadway play, Hamilton! Affiliate schools of Gilder Lehrman that are also Title I schools were offered the opportunity to apply for these tickets and we were lucky enough to be selected.

Students from all four high schools grades will go through a series of lessons on the revolutionary war, the life of Alexander Hamilton, and be exposed to many primary documents associated with the foundational era of our nations history. This special project will culminate in a rap, poem, scene, or monologue about a famous historical person, event, or document from the era in the style of Hamilton.

We are asking our students to come up with the small fee that goes towards the tickets as well as dinner money for our long day of travel, but we need your help getting to Charlotte, NC! Due to the distance from the performing arts center and the fact that we are lucky enough to be able to take 80 students with us, our transportation costs are high - over $1,800. We have mitigated the costs as much as possible by using the activity buses provided by our district.  We will also need to provide funds for the substitutes that will come in for some of our chaperones; we’ve been mindful to select chaperones that have a co-teacher or are classified staff members at our school but we could not entirely choose from that group of people. This totals around $250 dollars. Lastly, our bus will leave at 5 o’clock in the morning because we are traveling three hours to Charlotte. We’re looking for $50 to cover the cost of a breakfast in the bag for our students.

I am ecstatic that I have been able to facilitate this opportunity for my students. For many of them, this will be their first experience of this type, but I hope it will not be the last! I have already been blown away by the dedication and prowess of my young freshman this year, and many of the upperclassman attending have proved their tenacity year after year.

If you are friends with a number of young teachers on Facebook, this is probably not the first time that you’ve seen a go fund me request for classroom supplies, or help fund raising. Speaking for my people (those young  teachers), we are a passionate group that want everything for our students and we appreciate any support that we can get! Myself, my fellow teachers, and all of our students appreciate any donation that you can make to help us reach our goal and to help us reach Charlotte!
