Help RJ Stay Safe, Loved, and Home

For anyone who understands the joys and challenges of raising children—especially those with complex needs—this is a heartfelt plea for help.
RJ is a bright, sweet, and beautiful 3-year-old boy who has already endured more in his short life than most do in a lifetime. In the first four months of his life, he experienced neglect, malnutrition, and physical trauma. When RJ’s mother learned that the Department of Child and Family Services planned to intervene, she asked her parents to take him in, “just until she could get herself together.”

That’s when RJ was placed in the loving arms of his grandparents, Kim and Dan—two people who didn’t hesitate for a second. From day one, they provided RJ with the safety, love, and stability every child deserves.
As RJ began to settle into his new home, Kim and Dan noticed developmental delays. Trusting their instincts, they sought answers—and after thorough evaluations, RJ was diagnosed with autism and is nonspeaking. Caring for him quickly became a full-time commitment.
Despite her own physical disabilities, Kim became RJ’s primary caregiver, nurturer, and teacher. Dan changed jobs so he could work from home, supporting RJ’s needs and easing the physical burden on Kim. They adjusted their lives completely—sacrificing income, time, and comfort without hesitation. For them, RJ has always come first.

They built their days around his therapy. They modified their home for his safety. They made sure he had access to developmental and educational support. Slowly, they began to find their rhythm—until everything changed again.
RJ was diagnosed with two more serious medical conditions:

  • A laryngeal cleft, a rare disorder that affects his airway

  • Severe lead poisoning, caused by dangerously high levels of lead in their home

Suddenly, the fight intensified. There were multiple trips to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. Urgent renovations were needed to remove the lead and make their home truly safe. Kim and Dan reached out to every agency and support program they could find. They received some help—but not nearly enough.

Dan and Kim would never ask for help themselves—so we’re asking for them. They’ve used up their savings doing everything they can to protect RJ, but the financial burden has become overwhelming.
We are hoping to raise $8,000 to help cover:

  • Out-of-pocket medical expenses

  • Past and ongoing home renovations to remove lead and make their home safe

  • Specialized items and therapies to support RJ’s development and safety

Every dollar makes a difference. Every share spreads the word.

If you believe in the strength of family…
If you know the beauty and challenge of raising a child with special needs…
If you want to help a little boy stay in the only place he truly feels safe—
Please consider donating.

Let’s make sure RJ can continue to grow, thrive, and be loved in the home that has fought so hard to keep him safe.

On behalf of RJ and his devoted grandparents, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
