Our sweet little dachshund, Benji, went from running around the house to suddenly losing the use of his back legs almost overnight. He was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a painful spinal condition that is sadly common in dachshunds.
IVDD happens when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae in the spine slip or burst, pressing on the spinal cord and causing nerve damage. For Benji, this meant he couldn’t walk or control his bladder.
The vets explained that without surgery, his chances of recovery would be around 60%, but with surgery, those chances jumped to over 90%. We knew we had to give him the very best shot at walking again.
Benji has now had complex spinal surgery and is beginning his long road to recovery. He’ll need weeks of strict rest, regular check-ups and ongoing rehabilitation.
Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are vital to give him the best chance of walking again but these cost £130 per session and will continue for weeks, possibly months.
The surgery alone has cost £8,195.19. Our pet insurance will only cover £4,000, leaving us with a huge bill we simply can’t manage on our own.
Benji is the most loving, happy little soul and he deserves the chance to get back on his feet and live life to the fullest. Any donation, no matter the size, will go directly towards his surgery and recovery costs, including the physiotherapy and hydrotherapy that are so essential for his healing. Even sharing his story can make a huge difference.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping us give Benji the chance he deserves.
With love,
Keihanah, Shauna & Benji ❤️
