Call for Donations: Support Jatinder Singh’s family following the struggle against his deportation to India!
Jatinder Singh was deported to India on June 15, 2021, amidst a devastating second wave of COVID-19 in India. By deporting Jatinder Canada was in violation of what the UN and WHO has asked states to do: “suspend forced returns during the pandemic, in order to protect the health of migrants and communities”. COVID-19 cases and deaths are surging in India, and flights from India to Canada have been suspended since April 22, 2021.
Jatinder became undocumented in October 2019, after his refugee claim was refused and he was ordered to leave Canada. Like many people without status, he had decided to stay here, because it is home. After working throughout the pandemic as a truck driver, he was arrested following a minor car accident and spent two months in the Immigration Detention Centre, in Ontario then in Laval.
He was released early May with an electronic tracking bracelet, which was on him 24x7 until his deportation. The Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) has increasingly been using this measure to expand its surveillance and control over migrants. Not only are these bracelets inhumane, but their use has serious impacts on the mental health of migrants and their loved ones. In addition, Jatinder’s family was required to pay for the installation of the bracelet and have paid 1600$ for two months.
**This is an appeal to donate to Jatinder’s family who knocked at every door, political and legal, and worked with Solidarity Across Borders to run a campaign to stop his deportation.**
Jatinder’s cousin, Kamal and her husband have incurred an overall cost of $18,000 over this time, which includes bracelet installation fee of $3,000 in addition to the monthly fee as well the immigration consultant fee of over $10,000. Additional lawyer fees were incurred when his case was taken to the federal court to stop the deportation.
We are calling on community members to support Jatinder Singh’s family, and denounce the practice of deportation by the Canadian government as well as the use of electronic tracking bracelets by CBSA.

Jatinder Singh a été déporté vers l'Inde le 15 juin 2021 durant une deuxième vague dévastatrice de COVID-19 en Inde. En procédant à la déportation de M. Singh, le Canada viole ce que l'ONU et l'OMS ont demandé aux États de faire : "suspendre les retours forcés pendant la pandémie, afin de protéger la santé des migrants et des communautés". Les cas et les décès liés au COVID-19 continuent d’être en hausse en Inde et les vols de l'Inde vers le Canada sont suspendus depuis le 22 avril 2021.
Jatinder Singh a fait face à une déportation vers l’Inde le 15 juin 2021 alors que la seconde vague de COVID-19 était à son apogée. À ce moment, en Inde, les cas de COVID-19 et les décès liés à la maladie étaient exponentiels. De plus, les vols en provenance de l’Inde vers le Canada sont suspendus depuis le 22 avril 2021.
Jatinder est devenu sans papiers il y a trois ans, après que sa demande d’asile ait été refusée et qu’il ait reçu l’ordre de quitter le Canada. Comme beaucoup de personnes sans papiers, il a décidé de rester ici malgré tout, car ici, c’est chez lui. Après avoir travaillé pendant la pandémie comme camionneur, il a été arrêté dans le cadre d’un petit accident de voiture et a passé deux mois en détention. Il a été libéré au mois de mai avec un bracelet de surveillance électronique qu’il devait porter 24h/24h jusqu’à sa déportation. L’ASFC utilise de plus en plus cette mesure afin d’accroître son contrôle et sa surveillance des migrant-e-s. Ce traitement inhumain fragilise la santé mentale de gens qui vivent déjà dans des conditions difficiles et précaires. En plus, la famille de Jatinder a dû payer 1600$ ($800 par mois) pendant deux mois pour son bracelet!
Kamal, la cousine de Jatinder, et son mari ont contracté une dette de plus de 18 000 $ qui comprend les frais d'installation du bracelet de 3 000 $, des frais mensuels ainsi que des frais de consultant en immigration de plus de 10 000 $. Des frais d'avocat supplémentaires ont été encourus lorsque son dossier a été porté devant la cour fédérale pour arrêter la déportation.
Nous appelons la communauté à soutenir la famille de Jatinder Singh et de dénoncer la pratique de déportation par le gouvernement canadien ainsi que l'utilisation de bracelets électroniques par l'ASFC.
