Help Sofi Overcome a Rare Congenital Illness

Hi! I'm Gaby Poletti – aunt of the brave and wonderful Sofi. I live in England and I'm organizing this campaign to help her access a very important and complex surgery.

Here is a message from María – Sofi's mom – sharing their story:

Hello, my name is María Peralta. I'm from Paraguay, and I’m currently raising funds for a complex surgery that my daughter Sofia urgently needs.

Sofia was born on January 6, 2019, with a congenital intestinal malformation. Because it wasn’t detected in time, it led to further complications, including a secondary hiatal hernia and severe gastroesophageal reflux.

Between August and September 2024, Sofia underwent four major surgeries. Sadly, despite all efforts, the hernia returned, and the anti-reflux procedure didn’t have the desired outcome. Today, Sofia continues to experience significant discomfort and pain that greatly affect her quality of life. She had to stop going to school and step away from many of the activities she once enjoyed.

Her doctors have recommended that she undergo another surgery abroad, as the necessary medical technology and expertise are not available in our country (Paraguay). After four complex operations without lasting success, it’s clear that this next step requires a highly specialized team. We were referred to professionals at Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires, Argentina — a private institution with the experience and resources Sofia needs.

We are doing everything we can as a family, but this journey involves not only the cost of the surgeries themselves, but also travel and a prolonged stay away from home. That’s why we’ve set a goal of £55,000. This will help cover two procedures, medical tests, and living expenses while we are in Argentina. For reference, the previous surgeries in Paraguay — even with private health insurance — cost around $35,000 USD. We estimate that the total cost now could be twice as much, or even more.

We are deeply grateful for any support you can offer to help Sofia regain her well-being and return to being the active, joyful 6-year-old girl she truly is.

Hola! Soy Gaby Poletti - tía de la hermosa Sofi. Vivo en Inglaterra, y estoy organizando esta campaña para que Sofi logre acceder a una cirugía muy importante y compleja.

Aquí les comparto el mensaje de María - mamá de Sofi - con su historia:

Hola, me llamo María Peralta. Soy de Paraguay. Estoy recaudando fondos para una cirugía compleja que debe someterse mi hija Sofia.

Sofia nació el 06 de enero del año 2019. Ella nació con una mal formación congénita intestinal. Como no se le detectó a tiempo, esto derivó en una hernia hiatal secundaria y reflujo gastroesofágico. Entre agosto y setiembre del año 2024 Sofia se sometió a cuatro cirugías complejas. Posterior a dichas cirugías ella tuvo una recidiva de la hernia hiatal y la cirugía anti reflujo que le hicieron no fue eficaz. Hoy en día ella está con muchas molestias y dolores que impiden que ella tenga calidad de vida, esto generó que ella tenga que dejar el colegio y otras actividades propias de la edad.

Los médicos nos recomendaron que Sofi se opere en el exterior, puesto que en nuestro país no cuentan con el equipo medico necesario para su intervención. Sostienen que cuatro intervenciones invasivas fueron demasiadas como para no tener el resultado esperado. Los mismos nos derivaron con profesionales del Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Argentina, que es un ente privado. Por estos motivos estamos recaudando fondos, ya que tanto los estudios y la cirugía a la que se tiene que someter son muy costosos y debido a que se tiene que realizar fuera de nuestro país nos vemos obligados a dejar nuestro trabajos.

Establecimos esa meta de 55.000 GBP ya que se trata de dos procedimientos quirúrgicos que se tiene que realizar. Sumado a esto, también están los costos del viaje y la estadía que sería por un periodo prolongado. Las anteriores cirugías en Paraguay tuvieron un costo aproximado de 35.000 USD, contando inclusive con seguro médico. Por esto es que estimamos que en Argentina el costo total sería el doble, o tal vez más.

Apelamos a la generosidad de todos ustedes para que Sofi tenga calidad de vida, y pueda retomar las actividades propias de una niña de 6 años. Nosotros como familia estamos haciendo lo humanamente posible para que ella pueda estar bien.
