Hello, my name is Katie Tabet. I have created this fundraiser, along with my friends April Soltow and Sarah Smith, to raise money for our best friend Cathy Kuhn who is currently battling a her third tumor, this one in her brain. The three of us have been friends with Cathy since 2004, our freshman year at Patuxent High School. Since graduating high school in Lusby, Maryland, Cathy has moved to Oklahoma. Sarah and myself have stayed in the Southern Maryland area and April has moved to Georgia. Although we are geographically separated, we are still very close friends. Despite all of her recurring health issues, Cathy has always been a positive and energetic person. If you knew us in high school you knew how close Cathy and I are. If you met me in my adult life, chances are you have heard me talk about Cathy a lot. When we first met we were fast friends and over the years, we have become like family.
Cathy was born with Neurofibromatosis type 1 , a disease characterized by tumor growth along nerves in the skin, brain and other body parts. When she was only 2 years old she won the battle with cancer when she had her first tumor removed. It was the size of a grapefruit, and she went through chemotherapy for a year. Shortly after her 18th birthday they found and removed a non-cancerous tumor on her right kidney. Just this year, in June, she had another non-cancerous tumor removed from her thyroid. After she had this tumor removed she went to see a NF Specialist, Dr. James D.Battiste at the Stevenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City, OK. She is scheduled to have a tumor biopsy done by Dr. Michael Sughrue later this month and hopefully they can remove the whole tumor that day. This time the tumor is near her spinal cord. Because of its location, there are a lot of risks with doing this operation.
I would use this money to cover the costs of her medical expenses and to help her out with her monthly bills. She will miss about 2 months, or possibly more, of work recovering from this surgery. Cathy has been through a lot in her lifetime, due in part to living with NF, so this fundraiser will really help her out a lot.
I will always keep this page updated and let everyone know how Cathy is doing. April, Sarah and I plan on making the drive from to Oklahoma to be with Cathy before, during, and after the surgery.
