I’m raising funds for Douye: The Refugee Story, a powerful feature-length musical drama that’s incredibly close to my heart.

The Refugee Story follows Douye, a Nigerian refugee fighting for his life and identity as he seeks asylum in Canada to escape persecution for his sexuality. By day, Douye works tirelessly to care for his younger brother, Tamara, who is battling a terminal illness. By night, he pours his soul into musical performances at a small local bar—music becomes his refuge, his expression, and his hope.

As Tamara’s health declines and the shadows of their abusive past intensify, Douye makes a life-altering decision: to risk everything and apply for refugee status. Through soul-stirring songs and deeply emotional encounters, we witness his journey through poverty, systemic barriers, and profound loss.

His asylum is eventually granted—but at the devastating cost of losing Tamara. Douye’s victory is bittersweet, carried forward with the weight of his brother’s love, sacrifice, and memory.
