Cat Coal Needs Thyroid Treatment

Let's  Make A Difference, start 2021 off right!
Animal Lovers Unite! We are raising money to save a cat named Coal. He needs iodine treatment for severe hypothyroidism. We need to get him well so he can be his best self, have the life he deserves, and also so he can get some other medical procedures such as a dental cleaning.

Coal has some amazing caretakers rooting for him and support from IAR. He has had amazing daily caretakers feeding him, making sure he gets his medicine every day in his food, providing him with vet care and getting him to appointments. IAR would like to help Coal and assist with his care and the main goal of getting Coal the home that he deserves.

Here is Coal's story and more info from his caretaker:
Coal was first spotted in October of 2015 on a yucky rainy night. This caretaker is a feeder of a colony  of cats in Chapel Hill and you definitely notice when new cats appear at your colony. This black cat appeared, so talkative and asking for attention by rubbing around the person's legs. From that night on Coal began visiting every evening after that looking to get fed. This behavior leads us all to believe that Coal had some point had a place to call home and that he had been lost for a while or was abandoned. Coal is not feral, he did not have any identification or a microchip and we want to give him the life he deserves- a life full of love and care!

By December of 2019 his caretaker noticed that Coal had lost weight although eating. The weight lose became much more obvious by April or May of 2020and it was decided that Coal needed a vet visit. It took 2 months for his caretaker to trap him, but in July of 2020 Coal was taken to a nearby vet for a full vet visit where he received vaccines and routine bloodwork.

The vet and staff reported that Coal did very well at his visit. It was noted that he has some bad teeth and needs some extractions and cleaning to help some periodontitis; however Coal was underweight and needs to be his best self and at a healthy weight to undergo surgery.

Coal weighs less than 6.5 lb he is severely underweight. When bloodwork results came back, Coal's caretaker was notified that Coal is diagnosed with severed hyperthyroidism. His vet highly recommends Radioactive Iodine treatment at RadCats clinic in Carrboro and the cost is estimated to be between 1700 to 2000$ (plus boarding for 14 days if needed), if everything goes as planned. Right now he cannot chew or swallow solid food. So he is fed kitten canned food with added water and he gets his oral thyroid medication mixed in his food.

Initial Goal for Coal: The next plan for Coal will be to treat his thyroid first so he can gain some weight. After he is healthier and at an appropriate weight, he will be able to undergo his dental procedures which will be another cost for Coal this year.

Long Term Plan for Coal: After his treatments, his caretaker would like for Coal to have his furrever home! Preferably an indoor home so Coal can be safe and receive the care and food that he will need after his treatments and several less teeth.

Coal is a very social cat, enjoys attentions, and follows his caretaker around. He is a deserving boy and we all want to do what is best for Coal and remind him that the world is on his side and there is a lot of LOVE for him.
Especially with Coal being a black cat, he needs people rooting for him. For reasons we do not understand adoption rates for black animals are low and they get passed over. Once healthy and his best self we just know that Coal will shine and that many more people will notice Coal for who he really is!

Kind regards to everyone and thank you so much for supporting Coal and being a part of his journey to health and the life he deserves!
