Symphonic Organ for Castro Theatre

When I first arrived in San Francisco, I had an afternoon with nothing to do and dropped by the Castro Theatre to see a movie (that I can't remember now).  But what I do recall is that before the film rolled, rising out of nowhere was a mighty organ.  It, and the crowd's reaction, welcomed me and told me I was home.  Now, David Hegarty, the brilliant organist I heard play over 25 years ago has a plan with a silver lining:  replace the now departed Wurlitzer with the largest hybrid organ in the world!

Last year I agreed to help David raise $1 million.  San Francisco’s Castro Theatre was purpose built for the unique and delightful sounds of organ music. Built in 1922, the Castro Theatre is San Francisco Official Landmark #100 and attracts daily audiences of up to 1,400 each, more than 100,000 per year.

World-renowned organ designers and digital sound technicians have freely contributed their expertise and collaborated to create the world’s largest hybrid symphonic organ. It will replace the much-beloved but now-departed “Mighty Wurlitzer” organ which was enjoyed by generations, and its temporary replacement.

Movie audiences, student groups, music aficionados, performing arts patrons and visitors from around the world will be continually entertained, enriched and engaged by the multi-faceted capabilities of this unique instrument.

The organ will be the jewel in the crown of the landmark Castro Theatre, its familiar marquee and the cathedral of the Castro District neighborhood.

$1 million is required to supplement the priceless contributions of time and money from a multitude of enthusiastic volunteers and a select handful of world-renowned experts. $450,000 has been raised to date. No one tells the story better than volunteer and donor James McCombe, who produced this video which we're releasing for our June 10th "Organ-ic Event" at the Theatre (the link if above).

You can help, too!  We need you!!!   You will be rewarded by David in the Castro Theatre at the keyboard of his masterpiece:  the grand new organ at the Castro.  Give today.  Thank you!
