On November 27th, the day before Thanksgiving, Cassie (Wesner) Collins was diagnosed with triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma, which is an aggressive form of breast cancer. Appointments started December 3rd and it was determined a double mastectomy was the best, safest option; as triple negative breast cancer is very aggressive and has the least amount of treatment options. On December 16th, she was in the operating room. Prior to surgery, she was unsure if she would need radiation and chemotherapy to follow or just chemotherapy, depending on what the sentinel lymph nodes revealed after removal during her double mastectomy. To all of our relief, her lymph system was clear of cancer. This means she will be facing chemotherapy, but thankfully, no radiation. It was also determined that her margins were clear after surgery. These are all great things to celebrate!
This journey is one that has only just started. Although the surgery is through, the Collins family has a long journey ahead, with frequent trips to Marquette as well as Hancock, for chemotherapy and reconstruction treatments. She will also need another surgery in approximately 6 months, to complete the reconstruction.
Cassie is currently not working, but still requires daycare, as she is only permitted to lift 5 pounds (a gallon of milk is 8 pounds- for a comparison). The gas to and from appointments, the monthly bills that don’t stop, and the medical bills that are quickly adding up, are not waiting for her return to work.
Cassie and Jesse have never been eager to ask others for money, but are currently in a place where they have no other choice. They have a strong faith in God, that they will all make it through this journey stronger than they went in. Cassie is feeling positive and thankful for all of the support and prayers that she has received.
