The Cassandra Davis Scholarship

The Inspiration

Cassandra Davis was a resilient, kind, talented and awesome teenager. Like most children, she had a dream and that was to be a Journalist. Unfortunately, Cassandra died at 19 years old due to kidney failure. When she was diagnosed with the deadly kidney disease in 2009, she didn’t let that deter her from her studies. She was passionate about about learning, so much so, she studied from her hospital bed. Cassandra pressed on despite the pain and completed her high school studies with distinctions. This left many of her classmates, friends and family in awe.

The Cause

Sparked by how persistent Cassandra was despite her illness, her aunt, Michelle Davis decided to do a scholarship in her name. However, a few more deaths occurred in the family shortly after that contributed to the delay of getting the Cassandra Davis Scholarship up and running. Five years after her passing, Michelle knew it was time to carry on Cassandra’s torch.  She along with her family launched the Cassandra Davis Scholarship. This scholarship will assist at least one student to accomplish their dream without the worry and the financial struggle.

In January of 2018, the Cassandra Davis Scholarship was launched at her Alma Mater, Manchester High School. It was well received by the students.

The Mission

The need is great. Manchester High School is known as a prestigious school in Jamaica but some of the children are not without struggle. Some students, though at the top of their classes, aren’t able to attend school frequently due to lack of money for transportation to and from school, to purchase lunch and the necessary school books. The Guidance Counselor advised that the minimum a student pays for transportation to and from school is $360 US and for lunch $730 US and books $150 US yearly. That’s about $1240 US yearly for one student at the minimum cost. Since the launch of the scholarship, four students have been awarded scholarships. These scholarships aided in transportation, lunch and books.

How You Can Help

We appreciate any assistance you can give, be it cash or kind by sharing this post with others or any other way you believe you can assist. The financial goal is $2500 US. Thank you so much for reading and sharing Cassandra’s light. We are sure that if Cassandra can hear us, she’s smiling and loving this movement.
