Cashews LOVE Carbon

My name is Bryan Osborne, I am Chair of Friends of Kerr Layen a small UK Charity Group based in St Neots Cambridgeshire UK. Our team are running a project to plant 500 Cashew Trees on five hectares of land at Kerr Layen a village in the Central River Region of The Gambia. The land is ready the trees are in a nursery plantation. We need to fence the five hectares of land to keep wild animals out of the plantation and ensure that the trees develop to maturity.

 

Our charity has been working with the village of Kerr Layen for over one year.

 

Each tree will take four years to mature to mature and absorb up to 2tons of Carbon in a cropping life of up to 35yrs. The plantation will absorb over a thousand tons of Carbon in this time!

 

Cashew is a big cash crop in The Gambia where it is harvested and sold to purchase food and other vital products for the village. The Cashew Plantation is planted by the village for the village.

 

Your support will make a significant difference to the outcomes for Kerr Layen and contribute to reducing your own carbon footprint. To complete the project and fencing is approx £6 per tree. An average mid range car driving 7,500miles per year produces 2.0 tons of Co2. When mature it is estimated that twenty trees £120 will offset this amount of Carbon for a period of up to 30yrs. Just FOUR POUNDS per year.

 

This is a double benefits project, the Cashew farm will change the life opportunities for the children at Kerr Layen and the village future.

It will also reduce the Co2 pollution of a supporters car, a contribution toward the fight for global climate.
