My friend, Kristi Hanna Bumgarner, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2022 and had a lumpectomy soon after that revealed cancer in her lymph nodes near the tumor. Kristi then underwent another surgery in May to remove the lymph nodes from her underarm. Not having lymph nodes can mean Kristi will develop lymphedema (swelling in her arms that can be treated but not cured). Because the type of cancer she has is likely to reoccur in the future, she is going to have 16 intense rounds of chemotherapy using multiple drugs starting June 23, 2022. Her oncologist has put her cancer at stage 3 (out of 4) at this point.
Kristi and her family (spouse, Mason & son, Noah) live in the Avondale/Decatur area and were a Museum School family for 9 years. They are under a lot of emotional stress and are already experiencing extreme financial strain. The cost of treatment is exorbitant, and their insurance has a very high deductible. They don't know how much of the cost will be covered by the their policy either. Plus, her treatments will likely carry over into 2023, which means they will have to figure out how to meet the high deductible once again before insurance will kick in.
In addition to the cost of medical treatment, Kristi will also need medical supplies, additional medicines, etc.
Let's help Kristi, Mason, and Noah through this hard and scary time in their lives.
