On Wednesday, January 27th, Lee's father, George, had a massive stroke. He has been in the Intensive Care Unit at Baltimore Washington Medical Center since then on a ventilator and multiple critical medications. More scans and assessments will be done this week to try to get an idea of how his quality of life might look like moving forwards.

His daughter, Lee, is currently working full time AND in a graduate program for her master's degree, as well as dealing with this situation. She has been an indispensable presence in the Baltimore Rowing Community and helped so many individuals enter, grow, and thrive in the sport. She's an incredible coach, coxswain and friend. Lee has such a heart of gold that, while she's dealing with her dad in the hospital, working, studying, and surviving a global pandemic, she STILL found time to go support someone else in their time of need.

Due to the current global pandemic, Lee hasn't been able to go visit her father in the hospital. Imagine having to go through all of this and not be able to sit next to and support your family member.

In Maryland in 2018, every day as an inpatient (not even necessarily an Intensive Care patient) costs $2815 ("1999 - 2018 AHA Annual Survey"). With the way our economy is and looking at the data trends, we know that cost is even higher in 2021.

Let's say it hasn't changed and the cost per day is about $2800 to be a patient in a hospital. Lee's dad George has been in the hospital for 5 days now (as of 1/31/2021), and is expected to be there until at least Saturday (2/6/2021). That's 11 days of hospitalization. Using a rough, low-ball estimate, that will cost just under $31,000. Not including the fee for the ambulance and care prior to the hospital, as well as  further charges for the intensive care he's receiving.

I put the goal for this campaign at $10,000 so we can try to make a dent in not only the medical bills, but also the regular bills Lee and her father will have to deal with. My stretch goal is to cover as much as we can, if not all of it. The sooner we reach this goal, the sooner some of the weight can be lifted off of our friends shoulders.

2/3/21 Update: George does have Medicare, so his hospital stay will be under $2000 (we think). However, the plan is to continue to raise funds for future home care or (hopefully not needed) burial expenses.

Thank you for supporting our favorite coxswain and her father during this unprecedented time.
