Casa de Colores Crisis Shelter for Trans Migrants

The survival and safety of LGBTQIA+ migrant refugees (predominantly trans) is a major issue. Currently, four LGBTQIA+ people are murdered every day in Central and Latin America. Moreover, at least 1,300 LGBTQIA+ people have been murdered in these regions in the past five years, with Colombia, Mexico, and Honduras accounting for nearly 90% of deaths.

Out of all of the stigmatized and oppressed individuals, trans migrant refugees have been the most systematically targeted and discriminated against in Central and Latin America. This is through acts of violence, war, discrimination, rape, kidnapping, trafficking, assault, torture, and murder. There is a sliver of hope for those who might have the chance to reach the border city of Juarez, Mexico, where they await their chance to cross the border into El Paso, Texas. Yet, even in Juarez certain norms are still a huge deterrent for many people of this population to endure, since they will face many of the same aggressions they experienced in their own countries.

The immigration process to cross the border is long and bureaucratic. Resources are hard to attain and the government is unforgiving. LGBTQIA+ migrants have been unable to receive medical and psychological treatment and have been turned away from receiving resources (including food, clothing, transportation, and housing). They are most often left to fend for themselves in the streets of Juarez, Mexico.

Casa de Colores is a grassroots advocacy and direct-action organization, a shelter, and a network that helps trans migrant refugees navigate the asylum system with resources, temporary housing, and immigration services to cross the Mexican – United States border (from Juarez, Mexico into El Paso, Texas). At this point in time, Casa de Colores is the only humanitarian, direct-action group in El Paso that helps LGBTQIA+ migrant refugees in need with stipends and resources for clothing, food, clean water, shelter, transportation, and communication (cell phones and telecommunication services). Casa de Colores is filling a necessary gap for this population with our dedication and the support of our donors.

We are working tirelessly through advocacy, legal and social aid, and by providing resources for migrant refugees that identify as LGBTQIA+, predominantly trans and those living with HIV/ AIDS. These resources include clean water, food, clothing, shelter / shelter referral, telecommunications services, social worker and immigration lawyers on call, medical care, and - for very special circumstances - stipend services (cash in hand). In summary, Casa de Colores gives refugees guidance and an allocation of resources from the time they arrive to Juarez, Mexico to when they cross the border to El Paso, Texas. We are ultimately helping this population attain safety and survival with U.S. citizenship.

To help trans migrant refugees, we also collaborate with many non-profits and coalitions, including Santa Fe Dreamers, Las Americas, DHIA and a network of LGBTQIA+ shelters around the country.

La supervivencia y la seguridad de los refugiados migrantes LGBTQIA + (predominantemente trans) es un problema importante. Actualmente, cuatro personas LGBTQIA+ son asesinadas cada día en Centroamérica y América Latina. Además, al menos 1,300 personas LGBTQIA + han sido asesinadas en estas regiones en los últimos cinco años, en Colombia, México y Honduras representando casi el 90% de las muertes.

De todas las personas estigmatizadas y oprimidas, las refugiadas migrantes trans han sido las más sistemáticamente atacadas y discriminadas en América Central y América Latina. Esto es a través de actos de violencia, guerra, discriminación, violación, secuestro, trata, asalto, tortura y asesinato. Hay una pizca de esperanza para aquellos que podrían tener la oportunidad de llegar a la ciudad fronteriza de Juárez, México, donde esperan su oportunidad de cruzar la frontera hacia El Paso, Texas. Sin embargo, incluso en Juárez ciertas normas siguen siendo un gran elemento disuasorio para que muchas personas de esta población las soporten, ya que enfrentarán muchas de las mismas agresiones que experimentaron en sus propios países.

Los migrantes LGBTQIA + no han podido recibir tratamiento, tanto médico como psicológico, y se les ha negado la posibilidad de recibir recursos (incluidos alimentos, ropa, transporte y vivienda). La mayoría de las veces se les deja a su suerte en las calles de Juárez, México.

Casa de Colores es una organización de defensa y acción directa de base, un refugio y una red que ayuda a los refugiados migrantes trans a navegar por el sistema de asilo con recursos, vivienda temporal y servicios de inmigración para cruzar la frontera entre México y estados Unidos (desde Juárez, México hasta El Paso, Texas). En este momento, Casa de Colores es el único grupo humanitario de acción directa en El Paso que ayuda a los refugiados migrantes LGBTQIA + necesitados con estipendios y recursos para ropa, alimentos, refugio, transporte y comunicación (teléfonos celulares y servicios de telecomunicaciones). Casa de Colores está llenando un vacío necesario para esta población con nuestra dedicación y el apoyo de nuestros donantes.

Estamos trabajando incansablemente a través de la promoción, la ayuda legal y social, y proporcionando recursos para los refugiados migrantes que se identifican como LGBTQIA +, predominantemente trans y aquellos que viven con VIH / SIDA. Estos recursos incluyen agua potable, alimentos, ropa, referencia de refugio / refugio, servicios de telecomunicaciones, trabajadores sociales y abogados de inmigración de guardia, atención médica y, para circunstancias muy especiales, servicios de estipendio (efectivo en mano).
