Help Bring Zuléka and Alex Home for the Holidays!
Donation protected
Zuléka and Alex are a creative and talented Black, queer artist couple that grew up in the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately, they have experienced chronic homelessness in this area for many years. They face chronic conditions such as PTSD and systemic setbacks that make it difficult to take care of their condition while also working at full capacity to keep up the cost of housing.
Zuléka and Alex qualify for subsidized housing, but while they struggle to get state assistance, their friends and community have decided to come together to put an end to their homelessness. Beginning January 1st, Zuléka and Alex will receive consistent rent payments from some friends to give them stable housing while they work to secure subsidized housing and disability supports.
Why we are fundraising:
Zuléka and Alex have not had access to long term, reliable, secure housing for a long time. The combination of the pandemic working conditions, disability, rapid gentrification, and burn out has made finding safe work that will sustain the rapidly rising cost of living nearly impossible. They are seeking a space of autonomy and healing to create from. We are raising money for their moving costs and living expenses for 2022 until they can find more sustainable employment that meets the needs of and accommodates their intersecting identities.
We are following the “housing first” model that many homelessness prevention organizations use alongside state housing authorities. Most of these organizations are running over their capacity due to the severity of the homelessness crisis in California. We are calling on our friends, families, and extended community to provide urgent, direct aid to give Zuléka and Alex the foundation of security that they need to overcome these ongoing and intersecting challenges of socioeconomics, race, queerness, and disability.
