Family and friends, our wish is finally coming true…Carter is finally getting a bone marrow transplant! My name is Janet and I am one Carter’s grandmothers.
Carter is an amazing, smart and caring nine year old super hero that needs a stem cell transplant. Here is a little background on Carter’s condition. At 8 months old, Carter was diagnosed with X-Linked Hyper-IgM Immunodeficiency after contracting RSV and pneumonia. In simple terms he doesn’t have a working immune system. He has been receiving weekly immunoglobulin infusions as well as multiple weekly shots and medications since his diagnosis. (This is a link to a full description of Hyper IgM in a medical journal https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK1402/ ). A few of the limitations of Hyper IgM are not being able to swim in a pool, lake, pond and can’t drink tap water or unfiltered water for fear of it having cryptosporidium (which causes respiratory and gastrointestinal illness in immunodeficient humans). He is also unable to go to a farm or be around any livestock. School has been tricky because Carter would have to stay home if there are ANY sick kids in the class.
Last May Carter contracted cryptococcal fungal infection in his lymphatic system and spent almost a month in Children’s. He contracted this infection just by being a kid and playing outside, which has more risks than we could comprehend! He has been on antibiotics since then and his team of doctors are wanting to prevent more infections. Though a perfect match has not been found, through advances in medical science, Carter’s dad Dan, is able to give his son the gift of his stem cells. Carter and Dan have a long road ahead of them. Carter will be at BC Children’s for about 3 to 4 months. Dan’s recovery is also long and he will be off work for up to 3 months. While Jessica, Dan, Annabelle and Carter are in Vancouver, they won’t have the means to pay all their rent, bills and expenses they will incur. Carter and Annabelle, his sister, have been unable to attend regular school since the beginning of the pandemic so Jessica has been homeschooling them and not working.
This will enable Carter’s parents to concentrate on his recovery and hope that he will have a “new” normal life with some freedom from infusions and restrictions.
From the bottom of our hearts we humbly ask that you share this link with friends and family and if possible in giving (any amount will help).
We thank you so much for your support!
