My name is Nina and I’m friends with Lucas Molon and his beautiful partner Elizabeth (or Lilly if you will).
They were the victims and survivors of the home invasion that occurred in Carrara, in the early hours of Tuesday, that resulted in 8 stabbing wounds, one deep cut to the chest, high costs and the trauma that they will carry for life.
Throughout the last 4 days I went through a roller coaster of emotions, that left me, as a friend, sleepless, drained, revolted, happy to see my friends alive, but angry that the world permitted another human to act, for whatever reason, hostile and ready to not only harm another human physically, but mentally. Imagine what kind of roller coaster that they’ve been through.
Lucas Molon, is a Brazilian guy, full of life, living the life he has always dreamed with, a peaceful life, with a beautiful partner and their two dogs, sitting in their perfect backyard playing with their furry babies. Lucas works in something just as cool, after working for a few years as a volunteer surf lifesaver and helping so many in the Tamarama Beach in NSW, he got the tickets to work with rope access. Always in the high, he gets to see the coastline and earn his keep while appreciating how life is amazing.
Lilly is Australian, and just as in love with the life they had been living. Her home was her happy place, her family, her security and she has never felt unsafe.
Together for 7 years, the couple really had everything they wanted. Peace, each other and their dogs.
A heartless 18 year old decided, on Tuesday, to change this for them.
I can’t tell you the full story of what happened as the matter is now in the police’s hands. But, this person decided to invade their home while they were sleeping to steal 2 car keys and one videogame.
One of the dogs woke Lilly up, she then saw a flashlight shinning from within the house, she wakes Lucas up and he goes see what’s happening.
After 8 stabs and 1 deep cut, the attacker makes his way out of the back door.
Lucas is now bleeding, on the walls, on the couch. Lilly is calling 000 also bleeding from her chest. The dogs are barking.
The next hours are probably a blur, for them, as it is even for me, when I received my friend’s phone call pleading for me to call his mom as he didn’t know if he was going to survive. His voice is weak, I thought for a second that what he was saying could only be a joke, it wasn’t. He needs to hang up, he’s in ICU and there are too many doctors, he mumbles something and the line goes silent.
The words for his survival are many, they are amongst lucky, blessed, brave, strong. I preferred blessed. To have your nose chopped off, your arm sliced open, your lung punctured and wounds to the back and side of your neck and survive to tell the story? It has to be a protection by something bigger than us.
The scarring goes beyond that.
The trauma both Lilly and Lucas will carry is a heavy package.
How to feel safe home moving forward, if someone can just waltz into their living room?
How to deal with knowing that there are people out there that can harm you and even kill you with no rhyme or reason?
On the more practical side of things, now, because of a stranger that decided that invading someone’s home with a knife was a great idea, they have several costs to cover.
- Remaking of both car keys that were stolen and disposed somewhere unknown
- Security Review of their home
- Post-Hospital costs: such as any medicine needed for recovery, inclusive of specialist treatment for the mobility of his hand, creams and other needs for the nose reconstruction.
- Side costs: such as hotel for dogs for the nights that Lilly couldn’t go back home, Lilly’s accommodation after she was discharged from hospital but Lucas remained under care and food.
- Day-to-day bills with no income: neither Lucas or Lilly are working nor will be for a while. Lucas’ job demands a healthy and capable body to be performed, and Lilly will most likely be required to support Lucas for a while before she can return to hers.
So many beautiful people reach out to Lucas and Lilly, with their blessings, their prayers, their beautiful words of admiration and love. I sometimes think that Lucas’ survival from this attack came from the amount of love that his family and friends showered him with.
I thought if we get together, as a community, to support them, we can help them rebuild the trust and safety that were lost.
