Remembering Carolyn Calvaruso

Hi Everyone,

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Allison and I am Carolyn’s oldest daughter.

My mom was the strongest person I have ever known. She had a long and hard medical journey over the past few years. My mother was only born with one kidney which is where a lot of her medical problems stemmed from. She was a fighter and loved to prove the doctors wrong. When her and my father were trying to conceive she was told she would never have children. She leaves behind myself and my younger sister Lauren.

When I was in high school my mother had breast cancer and survived. Recently after this she was diagnosed with kidney disease. She was waiting for a transplant for years. She did dialysis at home every single day and recently switched over to doing dialysis at the hospital. This was due to an infection in her dialysis port. My family has watched my mom suffer over the past few years; in and out of doctors offices, taking handfuls of medication every single day. She never complained once. She was always so adamant about staying strong and healthy so she could one day receive a kidney transplant. Although my mother was chronically sick, her passing was very unexpected. She underwent surgery mid-June and unfortunately suffered a stroke that led to irreversible brain damage. She truly has been through so much. Due to these unforeseen circumstances I wanted to create a Go Fund Me to help my dad with lingering medical expenses and the funeral costs. Any money my dad has saved, is meant to go toward my younger sister Lauren’s senior year of college. She is studying to be a nurse and will someday be working in a hospital to support people like my mom. I know how incredibly proud she was of her.

My family has been through so much on this medical journey with my mom and I would love to alleviate the financial burden around her passing if possible. Donation is absolutely not necessary but would be so appreciated. If you are unable to donate monetarily please consider becoming an organ donor. If my mom had received a kidney, she would still be alive today. So many families are in the same situation, desperately waiting to get that call from the hospital. Organ donation is never something I wanted to think about being so young. Sometimes it can be difficult to think about life after death. Now I understand the need for organ donors and the after effects on families who never receive that call.

As we honor my mother and her life, please do not pity her. She was incredibly strong and full of fire. That is how I want her to be remembered.

Thank you.
