Dear Friends,

As you know wild fires, rainstorms and flooding over the past few months have been devastating for many people in Nova Scotia. Among them is a good friend of ours and the Down syndrome community.

During a flood in July, Carolyn Sinyerd and her husband Steven’s apartment filled with water and sewage. They lost all their furniture, most of their personal belongings and a place to live.

 

They stayed at a hotel for the first few nights and put their two dogs in a kennel thinking their insurance would take care of them. Unfortunately, that was not the case. They were told they didn’t have the appropriate coverage.

 

Then they suffered another heartbreak. One of their beloved dogs unexpectedly had to be put to sleep due to deteriorating health.

 

To say it has been a trying time for Carolyn and Steven would be an understatement.

 

That is why we are reaching out to let you know we are raising money to at least help with the financial side of their unexpected hardships.

Carolyn plays a big part in the lives of families in the Down syndrome community. She provides respite care to our daughters, Jessica Hanko and Claire and Elise Twyne. She also provides respite support to other families who have children with special needs. The girls absolutely love Carolyn and this disaster has affected their usual routines and activities.

But Carolyn isn’t simply a respite care provider. She is a friend and longtime volunteer facilitator with the Friday Night Social Group and other Down syndrome events, including fundraising.

 

All the money raised will go toward their hotel and kennel expenses as well as the purchase of furniture, clothing and other unexpected costs.

 

We are all one rainstorm or fire away from losing everything, so please consider giving whatever you can afford to help out the Sineyerds. No amount would be too small or too big.
