Carol's Community Clean-up

I'm raising funds for Raleigh International , a charity that delivers sustainable development projects in several countries worldwide, working with the local communities to provide access to clean water and sanitation, helping protect the environment and developing leadership skills in the young volunteers who take part.  I will be leading a group of volunteers from Jan-April 2018 and I have to raise £2500 so I need all the help I can get.

While other people were Christmas shopping, I spent a whole weekend in December doing a sponsored litter-pick for charity and everyone that donated had the chance to win some prizes!

Instead of a one-off adrenalin-fuelled stunt like a bungee-jump or shark-dive (not that I'm a wimp - honestly!) I wanted to fundraise through an activity that helps both people and planet, and in some way reflects the work of Raleigh International.

By cleaning the streets around my neighbourhood in Edinburgh I hoped to contribute to the local community, whilst also salvaging precious resources and diverting recyclable materials from landfill.  In addition, I wanted to raise awareness of some of the issues around waste, encourage people to think about their own impact and highlight some simple alternatives.

So here's the COMPETITION!... with some great prizes up for grabs.  Every £5 you donate gives you another chance to win a prize, by guessing the weight of each type of litter that I collect from my local area in a weekend.  There are 7 prizes available and unlimited entries!  So a £5 donation allows you to guess the weight of, for example, all the plastic that I find.  By donating £10 you can have 2 entries, so you might choose to guess the weight of metal AND the weight of glass that I pick up.  For £15 you can have 3 goes, so you could guess the weight for paper AND landfill AND metal etc.  The more generous your donation the more chances of winning a prize!

You can guess as many times as you like in the following categories:
 - Paper/Card
 - Plastic (recyclable)
 - Metal
 - Glass
 - Compostable (food, natural fabric etc)
 - Landfill (non-recyclable)
 - Total weight of all 'litter' collected

Just  write your guesses in the comments box when you make your donation e.g.  Glass: X.Xkg (either metric or imperial is fine.)

Prizes from New Leaf Co-opSpirit Tree Natural Skincare, Elephant Box and more - see updates for details and start making your guesses!

The project itself will be a big challenge for me.  We'll be living for 3 months in very basic conditions and also undertaking a trek... so I really need all the support (and physical training advice) I can get.

THANK YOU very much for all your help.
