Caroline's Mobility Fund

Earlier this week my friend Caroline was in a devastating accident during what should have been simply a fun day of sledding. At 31, an unexpected drop left her with a severed spinal cord and paralyzed from the waist down. She was air-lifted to a hospital where she underwent a 9+ hr surgery. It was successful in stabilizing her, but she will never be able to walk again.

Caroline is an avid dancer, hiker, and outdoor adventurer with a relentless enthusiasm for new things and exploring the world. I’m still in shock as I think of how I was standing next to her just three months ago when she married her loving husband Chris, and we all had a very different vision of plans for their new future and family together.

She's always been an incredibly strong and infectiously energetic friend who has added so much light and laughter to more lives than I can count. Caroline grew up in Holliston, went on to graduate from UMass Amherst in 2012 and most recently BU Goldman School of Dentistry in 2018. This is the beginning of a long road for her and family as they try to reimagine what the day-to-day will become and how best we can fill it with joy and comfort. While we will be packing her dance shoes, I'm hoping that together we can help show her how much she is in all of our thoughts, prayers, and hearts through everything. Letting her know how much she is loved.

Caroline will spend the next few weeks in the hospital until she's transferred to a rehabilitation facility for the upcoming months, where likely she won't be able to have visitors due to covid precautions. Meanwhile Chris and her family will be trying to prepare a more accessible house and making a lot of adjustments to try to make her feel at home. (Sophie their golden retriever will also have a large part to play in that!)

However, the costs of transition are daunting, and this fund is meant to help ease this burden even slightly where we can. Some of the anticipated costs include:

  • Handicap van - $50k
  • House ramps - $5k
  • ADA bathroom - $10k
  • Out of pocket medical expenses - $15k
  • On-going medical assistance

These and more will easily add up just to bring her home, so every little bit helps!

Thank you so much for your help in all and every way!
