1 in 10,000,000. Odds seem pretty good, right?
Last Friday our world came crashing down...AGAIN...when we found out our sweet Caroline was showing some of the same symptoms as her brother, Ben, who died almost 2 years ago to the date. She had a 1 in 10,000,000 chance of having the same diagnosis as her brother as this disease is rare. In fact, Ben and Caroline are only the 2nd documented case of siblings having this horrible disease.
Mommy Maleia and Daddy Doug, knowing the symptoms that brother Ben had faced, had been keeping a close eye on Caroline and her symptoms...thankfully. After a follow up appointment on Friday that revealed no weight gain in four days, the pediatrician admitted Caroline and also ordered a cardio workup on her. While the EKG revealed no issues, the echocardiogram was a different story. It was abnormal and her symptoms were indeed like brother Ben's.
Caroline was quickly airlifted to Iowa City for more tests Friday evening. On Saturday afternoon Caroline was accepted into a clinical trial and was again prepared for flight and arrived in Boston early Sunday morning.
She continues to undergo tests and is rebuilding her strength to prepare for heart surgery March 21st. She amazes us with her tenacity and strength she has already shown.
Undoubtedly your prayers are the MOST important thing we can do for her. The financial burden will be there, though, so this GoFundMe will alleviate the strain caused by:
medical bills...she will face many surgeries and potentially a lung transplant in the future
flights...they're 1300 miles from home
