"Caroline Goes" kids' book about Cystic Fibrosis
Donation protected
My name is Maria James, I'm 33, and I have Cystic Fibrosis. I've written a children's book called Caroline Goes to Kindergarten. The story follows Caroline, who has Cystic Fibrosis, and her family as she starts kindergarten. It discusses how they tackle talking about it with her teacher, nurses, and class, as well as their nervousness about meeting new kids and being thought of differently.
Looking back at my childhood and watching my nieces grow up, kindergarten is the first time that all kids are in school full-time, as some kids don't go to preschool or only go part-time. It is also the age that they really start to become more aware of themselves and differences they or others may face.
I wanted to create this first story that would to help children with Cystic Fibrosis or other chronic diseases or illnesses to address some of those feelings. As well as help parents as they navigate the next phase in life for their children and themselves.
My goal is to turn this into a series of places Caroline Goes such as camp, her first sleepover, on an airplane and more. Things that are perfectly normal, but have an extra level of emotional and / or physical complexity for a child with CF. Along the way, I'd like her to meet other kids who have other chronic illnesses, diseases or disabilities to normalize differences and teach compassion and understanding for everyone's unique situations.
All of the funds raised goes into the book production, printing, and distributing process. Any amount over the $13,000 goal will go into the production of the next book in the Caroline Goes series.
As a 'Thank you' for donations and to pay it forward, please see below for donation levels and thank you's:
$50 - $99: I'll send you a copy of the book when it's printed
$100 - $499: I'll send you a copy and donate a book to a school, library, or CF clinic
$500 - $999: I'll send you a copy and donate 5 books to a school, library, or CF clinic
$1,000+: I'll send you a copy and donate 10 books to a school, library or CF clinic
*Due to the current COVID-19 climate, I would love suggestions for where you would like to donate books, but will ultimately work with schools, libraries and clinics who are willing to take book donations when they are comfortable accepting them.
You all are AMAZING! I've had so much love and support in my life from my family and friends, this is my way of paying it forward and hopefully helping to spread a little love and understanding into the world.
Thank you and much love!
Maria
