Since 1993, Carolina Review has stood as the conservative and libertarian journal at the University of North Carolina. You can visit our website here.
This journal has enjoyed a meteoric rise this year, culminating in the establishment of metal news boxes across campus and historically high readership. However, some in UNC’s left-leaning student body have refused to accept our right to be heard. A week ago our website was attacked, where an unknown perpetrator deleted over sixteen years of student journalism and left a threatening message: “nazi scum f*** off.” One of our new boxes was vandalized with the word ‘racist’ only days after installation. This hostile attack has not discouraged us. Instead, it has increased our resolve to tirelessly fight to secure our right to speak and print freely on campus. Our request to Tar Heels, North Carolinians, and all Americans is an earnest call for assistance in our hour of need.
We are on the front lines of Carolina's intellectual and cultural battle, making the case daily to promote conservative and libertarian ideas and values. We know we are reaching students who are open to those ideas and are tired of cancel culture. Our campus should be a paragon of open discourse and a free exchange of ideas, and we strive towards that every day. This attack against our journal has cost us a lot of time and money, but we will stand strong. Your contribution ensures that free dialogue at this University will never go away, and that the most vocal advocate for conservatism at UNC will continue its mission to promote liberty, equality, and freedom for a student body that desperately needs it. We receive no money from the university and operate off of a limited printing grant, so your contributions are vital to the growth of our publication.
Funding Goals Broken Down:
($1200) - Toward reprinting our March-April issue: restocking our already-depleted magazine boxes and sending to prospective donors. Over the course of three days, almost all 320 issues of our first issue to be published within our news boxes were taken by curious students, faculty, and other members of the Chapel Hill community. We intend to use this money to restock our news boxes as soon as possible to meet the student body's demand for our journal.
($1800) - Toward migrating our website to a more secure host and revamping our online footprint. When our website was hacked, we lost nearly sixteen years worth of archived articles overnight. We cannot let this happen again. This money will go towards moving away from our old web host and investing in the security of our website to save our material. In addition, the bulk of the money used will go towards the establishment of a brand new and more feature-complete website. Features we wish to implement include: a streamlined process for posting articles, a search function, easy and effective links to join other aligned groups on campus, a Greek Life map, and a donation link.
($2000) - For the establishment of a dedicated media branch of Carolina Review. To provide original content and further cement ourselves as a student newspaper, we request $2000 for the purchase of media equipment that will be used to improve the overall quality of the paper. This will include: a DSLR camera, a softbox light kit, and audio equipment such as microphones. This will be used principally for providing original photography, exclusive interviews, and a professional workspace for our staff writers and media personnel.
($15000) - For the expansion of our print magazines. Due to the explosive demand for our print magazines, we pledge $15000 of our goal to dramatically expand print distribution. This specific amount will ensure that we are able to publish more than a thousand copies of every monthly issue we release next year without any setbacks. Keep in mind the undergraduate population alone of UNC is almost 20,000, and the graduate population almost 11,000.
($20000) - Toward the leasing of an office space within the town of Chapel Hill. As we move towards establishing ourselves more permanently on campus, we desire a collaborative space to serve as a center for conservative activism and journalism. The space will serve as a dedicated meeting and working location for Carolina Review.
As part of our commitment to you, we will reward your generous donations through a variety of ways that will benefit you. Our goal is to implement a donor list within the release of our back-to-school edition next school year, which is anticipated to be the biggest release in our publication’s history. In addition, we will provide you opportunities to advertise for your company, organization, or otherwise promote your sponsorship within our magazine in exchange for your financial support. You can contact us through the contact info provided.
Alumni of our organization can expect a newsletter to follow in the summer, and contributions by alumni and other major donors will be promoted within that letter.
