Carol's Fundraising for Hair Donation

Carol W is organizing this fundraiser to benefit Little Lady Locks.

Since my eldest sister, Carmen, was diagnosed with nasal cancer back in 2006, I have generally been keeping my hair long apart from during pregnancy and during the Covid lockdown. Little Angus loves to style my hair and therefore I tend to keep it long. However, not everyone is so lucky to be able to keep their precious hair due to medical reasons.

We lost Carmen to cancer in 2021 and it has been extremely difficult for me to cope with. As part of the grieving, I remembered the time Carmen lost a significant amount of hair as a result of the chemotherapy, how horrific and depressing the hair loss could be to a person that was already going through a lot in their life.

It is not a norm that Chinese or Hong Kongers will consider donating hair, mainly due to superstition. There is a Chinese saying that "your body and hair all come from your parents", so you should take extra good care of yourself to pay respect to your parents. Hair has always been regarded as an essential part of the body in Chinese culture and one should not easily give it out to others. I am hoping that my act will change this mentality and inspire more to donate their lovely long hair for a very good cause.

Therefore I have decided to donate my hair ‍and am also hoping to raise money in aid of Little Lady Locks .

Little Lady Locks provide free hair services to children and young adults who are suffering with hair loss due to medical reasons. All of their hair services are free of charge and are available to anyone under 18, living anywhere in the U.K.

A real-hair wig is made up of about 300 grams of hair, which is around 12 pony tails. It also costs the charity £500 and up to 60 hours to transform the donated hair into one child's wig.
