Life is not only too short, it is fragile too. Four days before Christmas last year, our lives changed. On the night of December 21, 2018, coming from grocery shopping for Christmas day, my mother (Carol Fallarme) alighted from the taxi in front of our house. She slipped because of a soft patch created by Maynilad (Philippine water company) construction. The site was partially covered with soil that turned muddy. As she put her weight on the soil, the ground gave in and she fell on her back, hit her head on the pavement, and became unconscious for a few minutes. When she became conscious, she had memory lapse and did not recognize my sister right away, and didn’t even remember what happened to her.
The bad fall of my mother has put her in a very precarious medical state, and was in the hospital for about eight (8) weeks. Her health has greatly deteriorated as the traumatic brain injury caused complications in other organs, and caused blood infection. The accident has definitely caused us great emotional turmoil, coupled with the emotional anxiety of uncertainty that she might not survive, and a great financial burden that we were not ready for. The hospital bills, professional fees and medical expenses drained us financially. Mommy has to go through regular dialysis, which she never had before the accident. She also has to go through rehabilitation to be able to walk again.
My sister and I have been transacting with the representatives of Maynilad Water Services Inc. requesting for financial assistance/compensation, as the accident was caused by their construction negligence. Through their subcontractor, they only offered of PhP 100,000 pesos (about US$2,500) financial compensation, which is only 4% of the total hospital bill. We now have to get a lawyer to represent our case, however, because of very limited funds, we can only get a pro bono or contingency lawyer.
My other main concern is my only sister, Shiela, because she is disabled with polio and partial visual impairment due to a terrible asthma attack in 2010, which halted her teaching career. I have been solely supporting her and my retired mother for the past years, and with the recent tragedy that drained our savings, I now badly need support, although this is difficult to admit. It took me weeks to finally decide to set this up. Thanks to friends who encouraged me, as we would like to spend more time with Mom.
The GoFundMe funds will go to Mom’s medications, dialysis, rehabilitation, doctors’ consultations, medical tests and procedures. And in the Philippines, these are costly, unfortunately. Mom is a retired Associate Professor from Assumption College, De La Salle University (DLSU), and DLSU-College of Saint Benilde. She started her teaching career as a Grade School teacher in PWU-JASMS.
Thank you very much, in advance, for any amount of donation. What matters is the Spirit of compassion, generosity and healing that this generates. May the blessings you extend go back to you a million-fold.
