Carmen's Brain Cancer Journey

On January 12th, 2021, we brought our Mom into the ER as we were concerned over her memory loss, aphasia, and exhaustion . After two quick CT scans, they found a large mass on the left side of Mom's brain. She was quickly admitted to the hospital and scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor. Surgery came two days later and went very well. They removed most of the mass and the swelling had come down greatly.

Mom spent 5 days at MaryFreeBed hospital after surgery for acute rehabilitation. On Saturday, January 23rd she came home without any pain. During her appointment on Monday, January 25th the neurologist diagnosed mom with Gliosarcoma. They are classified as grade 4 tumors, meaning they are cancerous and fast growing.

She quickly started treatment and was placed in a research trial here in Grand Rapids, MI. She received six weeks of radiation and that followed with immunotherapy infusions. She's still receiving Optivo infusions biweekly. We are carefully monitoring her seizures which is a heartbreaking side effect of Gliosarcoma.

Right now we are hoping to raise funds for her ongoing medical expenses. She is covered by their insurance policy, however if we switch to a different research trial or get second opinions, everything will be out of network. We plan to donate all remaining funds towards further brain cancer research in her name at the Cancer Research Consortium of West Michigan.

Thank you! We appreciate you all.
