Carly Beth's Diabetic Alert Dog
Donation protected
My sister Carly Beth was a healthy university student until suddenly right before Christmas 2009 she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 22. There were many miracles which lead to her surviving to her diagnosis. She was in the hospital until just before Christmas day. Little did anyone know that nothing would be the same again.
My entire family has spent many nights waking her up making sure she was still alive and correcting her blood sugar. Corrections often involve needing to go on late night runs to get her high blood sugars down. Carly's blood sugar changes a lot despite her very low carb diet. This causes her moods to be unpredictable, a side effect she really does not like to endure.
Even with diabetes Carly has been able to accomplish much, including finishing her bachelor's degree at BYU- Idaho with summa cum laude, doing her student teaching and having a teaching job in a middle school, completing a master's program at the University of Cambridge in England and currently working on her PhD, also at the University of Cambridge. Her research is based on improving education for First Nations in Canada, specifically those with special needs. This is a very important area of research since currently graduation rates are very low, however, it is often neglected. Carly is on loans for her PhD and pays hundreds a month for diabetic supplies. A diabetic alert dog is out of her reach without your help!
Carly uses all the newest diabetic equipment including an insulin pump and a constant glucose monitor. But even so, has many life threating highs and lows. What she needs to prevent these and be as healthy as possible is a diabetic alert dog. These dogs are trained to detect high and low blood sugars before they happen so the patient can correct them without having to face them. These dogs are expensive because of the intensive training needed since their job is so important to the patient's life. They also wake up the patient which would greatly help Carly since she is often alone and family must depend on phone calls to check on her. Carly has not had a good nights sleep in years and worries if she will wake up. A dog would help her to sleep without having to set alarms and phone calls all night to check blood sugar levels.
This dog would greatly increase my sister's quality of life and would also help her function more normally. Diabetes can often be a lonely and isolating condition. Having a dog would aid in understanding Carly, even her blood sugar levels. This dog would give my family peace of mind and literally save my sister's life on a daily basis. Please consider donating because Carly has too much to offer this world for diabetes to cut her life short.
Carly travelled to Iceland to run with team diabetes after raising thousands for diabetes research. Carly needs to run often to control blood sugars. This is often a time when her sugars change a lot and having the dog with her would help greatly.
"When I get up in the morning and see this I know Carly has been up hoping to correct high blood sugars. Diabetes does not sleep. It is here to stay. Never gives you a break even when you were at the gym till 10 last night and dosed insulin for everything you ate..... maybe there is a blockage in the insulin line or infection at the site?"

Diabetes never takes a vacation, here she is in Mexico with her insulin pump.
Things like this happen far too often and could be avoided using her diabetic alert dog.
Let's make this dream come true!
