Carlos Segovia Heart of Compassion Scholarship

Tax deductible
On September 16th, 2016, a beloved former Get Lit Player poet and US Marine, Carlos Segovia, was gunned down in South LA, a victim of random violence, leaving not only his family but his whole community in mourning.

Carlos's senseless death created an outpouring of love as thousands gathered to mourn his passing. In addition to being a Get Lit Player, a doting son and brother, and a dedicated Marine who enlisted in a time of war, he was an advocate for animals and the homeless, and a long time volunteer for the LA nonprofit Cloud9 which takes care of homeless people and animals in need.

At Get Lit, we remember the words of the classic poets who have touched our hearts, and we celebrate and keep them alive through our performance of their words. In this same way, we will remember Carlos Segovia through the Carlos Segovia Scholarship Fund we have created along with iconic 90-year old poetry institution Beyond Baroque.

Each year, we will remember Carlos Segovia on his birthday, March 7th, by awarding a cash endowment to one deserving high school senior who has been accepted to college and needs additional funds for travel, books, or other incidentals.

Our goal is to raise $1,500 to give to a deserving senior. Many times, it is small incidentals (money for books, clothes, travel, etc.) that keep students from attending college.  (The other $1,500 is donated by Beyond Baroque.) We need your help in achieving our third-year goal in memory of Carlos. We ask that you please consider giving by March 28th to help LA youth thrive and honor Carlos' legacy.

Thank you!
